
Linares, Mesquita, Turco Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State's Maria Linares, Ines Mesquita and Anna Turco each earned a spot on the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 First Team, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Linares and Turco, both sophomores, earn their first Academic All-Big 12 Team nod after being named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team a year ago. A junior, Mesquita takes home her second career Academic All-Big 12 First Team accolade after being selected in 2018.
The 2018 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Linares played most of her singles matches at the top of the lineup for the Wildcats. The Maracay, Venezuela, native went 5-5 from the No. 1 spot while picking up 10 singles victories during the spring season. Linares also tallied eight doubles victories being paired with Ioana Gheorghita and Mesquita.
Mesquita ended the season by winning four of her final six matches, all from the fifth position in the singles lineup. A product of Lourinha, Portugal, Mesquita tallied a team-best 12 doubles victories during the dual campaign, tallying 10 with doubles partner Karine-Marion Job at the No. 2 spot.
Turco led all Wildcats with five 14 singles wins and five Big 12 singles victories. Turco, from Mondovi, Italy, worked her way to the top of the singles lineup for the first time in her career, as she was slotted in the No. 1 position for the Big 12 Championship. She ended the year by winning six of her last seven singles matches, including a stretch of five straight. Turco played the entire spring season with Margot Decker at the No. 1 doubles spot, turning in a mark of 10-11 (3-3 Big 12).
The trio were part of 30 selected to the women's first team, with a total of 35 making up both the first and second teams.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
K-State concluded its regular season with a 13-11 (2-7 Big 12) record and an appearance in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Championship. The Cats spent six consecutive weeks in the ITA team rankings, reaching as high as No. 33 this season.
