Apr 27, 2019 | Track & Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams concluded its weekend at the National Relay Championships at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where the Wildcats recorded several top performances in the relay events and a first-place finish from senior Shardia Lawrence in the women's triple jump on Saturday.
"We had a significant number of quality performances within our relays. We saw some great efforts," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "I really like the format of the meet. Having Friday to do a lot of open stuff was great, the brevity of today's competition is really nice."
The Wildcat men and women each placed third overall at the National Relay Championships, which scores only the six relay events throughout the meet. The K-State women finished with 34 points, while the men finished with 29 points.
Already holding the sixth-best jump in the NCAA in the women's triple jump, Lawrence jumped over 13.50 meters on three of her six jumps on Saturday, including the winning jump of 13.65m/44-09.50 (6.2). Her wind-aided jump of 13.65m/44-09.50 is the best of her season, after jumping 13.58m/44-06.75 set at the Texas Relays.
Along with Lawrence's winning jump, junior Konstatina Romaiou set a new personal best in the triple jump, leaping 13.16m/43-02.25 on her final attempt, placing fifth overall.
The Wildcats found success in the relay events on Saturday, with the K-State women's 4x800 meter relay recorded the top finish, placing second overall in 9:01.24. The team recorded the second-fastest time of the season, after running a 8:42.25 at the Texas Relays.
In the men's 4x400 meter relay, the K-State relay team finished in 3:18.21 to place 12thoverall. The relay was the fifth-fastest of the season for the 4x400 meter relay squad, with the fastest coming at the Sun Angel Classic.
