Tigers Bury Cats Wednesday

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Former conference rivals K-State and Missouri met for the first time since 2012 on Wednesday, with the Tigers' Austin James driving in a game-high six runs to help Missouri defeat the Wildcats 17-2 at Taylor Stadium.

Missouri scored in each of the game's first five innings, including a four-run third and a five-run fourth before a six spot in the fifth opened a 17-run lead for the Tigers.

K-State scored its first run in the top of the seventh, getting hits from Jordan Maxson and Will Brennan in the inning. Maxson slid home on a passed ball to for the Cats' first run.

Cameron Thompson drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to record the only RBI for K-State.

Jeffrey Boggess and Dylan Phillips each had two hits for the Wildcats. Phillips had K-State's only extra-base-hit, a double in the eighth. Boggess, who entered as a pinch hitter, tallied the Cats' first hit off MU starter Tommy Springer in the fifth inning.

Springer did not allow a hit and faced the minimum until two outs in the top of the fifth – Boggess' pinch-hit single. Springer earned his second victory of the season and picked up seven strikeouts in five innings of work.

K-State starter Kasey Ford pitched into the third inning and took the loss. Ford allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

James hit a three-run homer in the fourth after delivering an RBI single in the third. Tony Ortiz drove in four in the game, including an RBI single in the third before a two-run double in the fourth.

James finished 3-for-4 with a double, home run and six runs driven in. Ortiz went 3-for-3 with a double, four RBI and three runs scored.

Mitch Zubradt continued his scoreless streak to begin the season after he tossed a perfect eighth inning of relief. Zubradt has yet to allow a run over 16 2/3 innings (13 appearances), allowing two hits with 22 strikeouts.

Seven Wildcat relievers combined to issue 11 walks while striking out 10.

Justin Butz, Phillips and Zubradt limited the Tiger offense to zero runs on one hit over the game's final 3 2/3 innings.
