Cats Quieted by Bluejays Friday Night
Apr 05, 2019 | Baseball
OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton did all its damage in the third inning, scoring four in the frame, while starting pitcher Mitch Ragan tossed seven shutout innings in a 4-0 victory over K-State at TD Ameritrade Park Friday night.
K-State starter Griffin Hassall retired the first seven he faced until David Vilches singled in the third, beginning a stretch of seven straight Bluejays to reach base. Creighton ended the frame with four runs on three hits, highlighted by a two-run double by Will Robertson with the bases loaded. Hassall walked two and hit a pair of batters, as 10 CU hitters came to the plate.
"He pitched well, just have to avoid that one inning," head coach Pete Hughes said after the game. "That's been the story of our season really – trying to manage the inning and damage control.
"He's a freshman out there battling and making big pitches for us. Just no margin for error tonight."
Hassall tossed a career-long 6 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits. He walked three and hit four batters to go with six strikeouts.
Ragan scattered three hits over his seven innings of work, picking up nine strikeouts without a walk in keeping the Cats off the scoreboard.
"Their starting pitcher was going to be tough to scratch a few runs on and the conditions were not offensive," added Hughes.
Hassall responded after the four-run third by retiring 10 of the next 12 hitters, including a string of seven straight at one point. The freshman righty yielded just one hit after the third inning.
K-State (12-19) dropped its third straight game and was shut out for the second time in three games. Creighton (15-6) won for the eighth time in its last nine contests.
Terrence Spurlin had two of the Wildcats' five hits in the game. Will Brennan, Jordan Maxson and Cameron Thompson all singled on the night.
Junior Luke Hauswirth held the Bluejays scoreless over 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.
Parker Upton and Jack Strunc each drove in a run for Creighton. Robertson's double was the only extra-base hit of the game by either side.
John Sakowski kept the Cats scoreless over the final two innings. Ragan and Sakowski did not issue a walk in the game.
K-State and Creighton continue the three-game set Saturday at 2 p.m. Live video coverage is available at GoCreighton.com with radio coverage available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM). Live audio will also stream at K-StateSports.com/watch.
