Cats Pick up First Big 12 Win Against Mountaineers
Apr 05, 2019 | Tennis
MANHATTAN, Kan.?– On Friday, the K-State women's tennis team swept the West Virginia Mountaineers at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium, 7-0.
"It was a solid performance overall by the team," head coach Jordan Smith said. "We've made a lot of progress in doubles recently and won three of the last four doubles points. This helps us a lot in gaining momentum early in matches. An area the team has been working hard to improve. So, it was good we got the doubles point today and then started well in singles. Our goal was to not allow WVU to get into the match. Which we did a very good job of today.
"It's good that we got a conference win today. We've been battling hard in conference play and came up just short in those earlier matches. We know that we are right there and capable of competing with any team in the Big 12."
The Wildcats (11-9, 1-6 Big 12) opened the day by clinching the doubles point for the third time in their last four matches with wins on Courts 1 and 2. Sophomores Anna Turco and Margot Decker defeated Sofia Duran and Anastasiia Bovolskaia, 6-0. At the No. 2 spot, freshman Karine-Marion Job and junior Ines Mesquita defeated Paula Goetz and Nicole Roc, 6-1.
Freshman Ioana Gheorghita and sophomore Maria Linares competed against Anne-Sophie Courteau and Abigail Rosiello, but went unfinished with the score at 4-2 when the doubles point was sealed.
In singles action, K-State won in straight sets in five of six matches.
Job won at the No. 4 spot against Courteau, 6-2, 6-1. Turco won on Court 2 over Duran, 6-2, 6-2. Job and Turco both have a singles record of 12-6, which marks the team's best.
At the No. 3 spot, Decker picked up the fourth win for the Wildcats against Bovolskaia, 6-2, 6-1. Linares won from the No. 1 spot over Christina Jordan, 6-2, 6-3.
From the No. 6 spot, Gheorghita upended Caputo, 6-4, 6-2, then Mesquita won the final point of the day with a win over Roc in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 4-6, (10-7).
"If we continue to believe in ourselves during stressful moments then we should do well against Iowa State," Smith said. "They are going to bring their best against us and the team is ready for this challenge and to make them earn each point."
The Cats' home finale will be Sunday against Iowa State at 1 p.m. at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
