May 17, 2019 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State volleyball is set to depart on a nine-day foreign trip to Brazil, as the Wildcats will play a series of exhibition matches in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo along with training sessions at the Brazilian National Team Training Center from May 29-June 6.
The Wildcats will begin their trip in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, May 29, with three days of training sessions with the Brazilian U20 National Team at the team's national training center in Saquarema.
While in Rio de Janeiro, the Cats will also play an exhibition match with the professional club U21 Fluminense. K-State will then travel to Sao Paulo for matches against clubs U21 Esporte Clube Pinheiros and Sao Caetano. In total, K-State will play five matches against Brazilian clubs over the 10 days to go with training and practice sessions.
"This is an incredible opportunity for our team to have both a competitive and cultural experience," head coach Suzie Fritz said. "Volleyball is a very popular sport in Brazil and internationally, they boast some of the best teams in the world, for both men and women. We are very grateful to our administration within K-State Athletics for their support and encouragement to provide this amazing adventure to the women on our team. Having the chance to train for eight days, in addition to the training and competition opportunities in Brazil, gives us time to build something special together in advance of the 2019 season."
The NCAA allows teams to take foreign trips once every four years as long as competition is included as part of the travel. Teams that take foreign tours are allowed an extra 10 days of practice in preparation of the trip.
Season tickets for the 2019 campaign, which start at less than $3 per match, are now on sale. Fans can purchase season tickets by visiting K-StateSports.com/tickets, calling 1-800-221-CATS or stopping by the K-State Athletics Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum.
K-State's home opener will be Thursday, September 5 against Clemson at 6 p.m. The matchup with the Tigers kicks off the annual K-State Invitational, which will be played September 5-7. The tournament field also includes Central Arkansas and Omaha.
K-State will also host an exhibition match with Missouri on Saturday, August 24 at 3 p.m. at Ahearn Field House.
K-State is set to return eight letterwinners from last year's squad, including seniors Sarah Dixon and Mckenzi Weber. The Cats retain 2018 AVCA All-America Honorable Mention selections in Dixon and Gloria Mutiri. K-State also welcomes in a five-member freshman class to pair with four redshirt freshmen.
