SACRAMENTO, Calif. – On the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary, the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams qualified four more entries for the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California on Saturday.
"The big thing is getting the people through who can big things in the final weekend," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "For the most part, we did that. I feel like we had a good weekend and did some really good things. It's a continuation of a very solid year."
Entering the final day of competition with nine individuals who already punched their tickets, the Wildcats upped their tally to 15 on Saturday, marking the third season the Wildcats set 15 individuals to the NCAA Championships. The 15 individuals occupy 13 total entries, with 10 individuals represented on the women's team and five on the men's team.
The Wildcats began the day in the women's triple jump, where senior Shardia Lawrence qualified for her third-career NCAA Outdoor Championship, entering with the second-best mark out of the West Region. Lawrence, who jumped over 13 meters on all three of her attempts on Saturday, found her best jump of 13.44m/44-01.25 on her final attempt to place second overall. Junior Konstantina Romaiou just missed the cut for the Championships by jumping 12.70m/41-08 to place 18th overall.
Last year's NCAA Champion in the men's high jump, sophomore Tejaswin Shankar qualified for his second-career NCAA Outdoor Championship, clearing all three of his jumps on his first attempt, including a top clearance of 2.16m/7-01, tying for first overall. Shankar enters the NCAA Championships with a top jump of 2.26m/7-05, which won him the Big 12 title on May 11.
After winning the Big 12 Championship in the women's shot put with a throw of 17.74m/58-02.50 two weeks ago, sophomore Taylor Latimer continued to come through in the clutch on Saturday. After fouling on her first two attempts, Latimer recorded a throw of 17.00m/55-09.25 to move her into eighth overall, punching her first ticket to the NCAA Championships in her career.
In the women's 4x100 meter relay, the team of Taishia Pryce, Asha Cave, Ranae McKenzie and Lavaun Stephenson pushed their way into the NCAA Championship, running the 10th-fastest time of 44.60 to grab the second time-qualifying spot. The 44.60 was the second-fastest for K-State this season and the sixth-fastest in K-State outdoor history.
