May 04, 2019 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams hosted the Ward Haylett Invitational in Manhattan, Kansas, where the Wildcats competed on the newly-renovated R.V. Christian Track and recognized its 12 seniors on Saturday.
12 Wildcats were highlighted for their contributions to K-State Track and Field and Cross Country on Saturday, including Nick Albus, Asha Cave, Morgan Coffman, Max Estill, Devie Freeman II, NaTron Gipson, Joe Gorthy, Shardia Lawrence, Kurt Loevenstein, Ranae McKenzie, Brett Neelly and Tom Pyle.
The Wildcats also made their debut on the newly-renovated R.V. Christian Track this weekend, where K-State competed against Kansas and UMKC. The Wildcats registered 12 first-place performances, 18 personal bests and several K-State top-10 performances.
In the women's discus, junior Ashley Petr broke the 55-meter barrier twice on Saturday, including a personal best throw of 55.90m/183-05 that came on her last attempt. Petr's big throw won her the competition and moved her into third all-time in K-State history, as she previously stood in sixth with a throw of 54.09m/177-05 entering the meet.
Also moving up in the K-State top-10 lists, junior Konstantina Romaiou jumped a personal best 13.16m/43-02.25 in the women's triple jump, which moved her from seventh to sixth in K-State outdoor history. Romaiou's jump came on her first attempt and would be enough to win her the event, while fellow Wildcat Shardia Lawrence finished second overall with a top jump of 13.13m/43-01.
On the track, senior Asha Cave set a pair of big personal bests in the women's 100 and 200 meters, including a second-place finish of 23.84 to place second in the 200 meters and move into ninth in K-State outdoor history. Former Wildcat A'Keyla Mitchell went on to win the event, clocking a 23.17 to set a new Ward Haylett Invitational Meet Record.
In the men's 800 meters, a pair of Wildcats, redshirt freshman Dylan Brenneman and junior Keegan Donahue set personal bests in the event, as Brenneman finished third overall with a time of 1:54.29, while Donahue finished fourth in 1:56.06. Competing unattached, Travis Hodge went on to win the event by running a 1:51.21.
"It was great getting to experience something that we have spent so much time on, waiting for this debut moment" Neelly said. "Four years has flown by incredibly but being here, being a senior and being recognized was a very heartwarming experience."
K-State will shift its focus to the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, which take place on May 10-12 in Norman, Oklahoma. The K-State women look to defend their back-to-back Big 12 Outdoor titles, while the K-State men are coming off their highest point total at the meet in K-State history. The 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Championship will stream live on FloTrack with a paid subscription.
