Wildcats Primed for Big 12 Outdoor Championship in Norman

May 09, 2019 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams are set to compete at the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship at John Jacobs Track and Field Complex in Norman, Oklahoma on May 10-12, as the Wildcats look to repeat their historic showing from a season ago.

The three-day championship meet kicks off on Friday with the start of the combined events, followed by finals in the men's and women's hammer throw, javelin and 10,000 meters. The meet continues with 10 event finals on Saturday, followed by the final day of competition on Sunday. For a complete schedule of events, click here.

The K-State women, ranked No. 13 in the latest USTFCCCA Ratings Index, will look to defend their back-to-back Big 12 titles this weekend, after scoring a program-best 135 points at the meet in 2018. Meanwhile, the K-State men will look to continue their success from a season ago, where the Wildcats scored a program-best 101 points, tying for third in the overall standings.

The Wildcats return three Big 12 outdoor individual championships, including last year's Big 12 Champion in the women's 400-meter hurdles, Ranae McKenzie. McKenzie already holds the fastest 400-meter hurdle time in the country this season, running 56.11 at the Michael Johnson Invitational.

In the field, seniors Brett Neelly and Shardia Lawrence make their final Big 12 outdoor appearance, after Neelly won the Big 12 title in men's shot put and Lawrence won the women's triple jump crown in 2017.

Entering the conference meet, the Wildcats hold five marks that are at the top of the conference this season, including Tejaswin Shankar (high jump), Kassidy Johnson (800 meters), Ranae McKenzie (400-meter hurdles), Taishia Pryce (long jump) and Helene Ingvaldsen (hammer throw).

The Wildcats have earned recognition for their success this season, with the K-State men's and women's teams combining for four Big 12 Athlete of the Week awards. Most recently, junior Ashley Petr was named Big 12 Athlete of the Week on May 8, after throwing the No. 3 mark in K-State history in the women's discus at Saturday's Ward Haylett Invitational.

The 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Championship will stream live on FloTrack, accessible with a paid subscription. For more information on the meet, click here.
