Jun 26, 2019 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Molly Ross of the Kansas State women's rowing team was nominated for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year, the NCAA office announced on Wednesday.
Ross joins a record 585 female college athletes nominated by NCAA member schools for the annual award.
Ross, a native of Westwood, Kansas, is pursuing her Doctorate Degree in Nuclear Engineering after obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics from K-State in 2017. Ross' outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments have garnered some well-deserved recognition, being named the Big 12 Rowing Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2019.
Ross has also been named to the First Team Academic All-Big 12 team in four consecutive seasons, while earning Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete recognition in 2018. Ross' research on neutron imaging has led her presenting research at conferences in Orlando, Florida and Mumbai, India.
While balancing academics and athletics, Ross played a crucial role in the success of the women's rowing team, earning bronze medals at the 2017 and 2018 Big 12 Championship. This season, Ross helped the 2v4+ boat to silver medals at the Sunshine State Invitational and SIRA Championships, before defeating Kansas in the Sunflower Showdown on May 4. The K-State women's rowing team was later named the Big 12 Co-Sportspersons of the Year.
Established in 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year award recognizes graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
The nominees competed in 23 different spots across all three NCAA divisions, including 262 individuals nominated form Division I. Next, conferences will select up to two nominees each from the pool of school nominees. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees – 10 from each division.
The selection committee will determine the top three honorees from each division from the Top 30 and announce the nine finalists in September. From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then will choose the NCAA Woman of the Year.
The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated, and the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual award ceremony Oct. 20 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
