Jun 07, 2019 | Track & Field
AUSTIN, Texas – The Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams competed on day two of the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Mike A. Myers in Austin, Texas on Thursday, where sophomore Taylor Latimer and junior Aaron Booth notched First Team All-America honors.
Latimer, in her first-career NCAA Championship appearance, placed fourth overall in the women's shot put to earn First Team All-America honors, while Booth earned First Team All-America honors in the men's decathlon, where he scored a career-best 7,680 points to place sixth overall.
"It was a grind from the start. To finish and do as well as I did, I'm really proud because I wasn't sure if I would be able to finish some events," Booth said following his All-American finish. "I felt like I used all that I had so I'm happy to come in at sixth."
In the women's shot put, Latimer, the Big 12 Outdoor Champion, launched a throw of 17.28m/56-08.50 on her second attempt, which moved her into fourth overall. On her very next throw, Latimer would move herself up into third with a throw of 17.30m/56-09.25 heading into finals.
In the finals, Latimer used her final throw to move from fifth into fourth by throwing 17.67m/57-11.75, which is her second-best throw of her career. Latimer would round out the competition in fourth place overall, earning First Team All-America honors in her first-career NCAA Championship. Latimer's fourth-place finish is the best since former Wildcat Dani Winters also placed fourth at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
Thursday also marked day two of the men's decathlon competition, where Booth entered the day with 3,952 points in 10th place.
Booth wasted no time getting off to a hot start on Thursday, as he set a new personal best of 15.32 (1.7) in the first event of the day, the decathlon 110-meter hurdles.
After a long rain delay, Booth continued to move up the decathlon standings, as he placed fourth in the men's pole vault by vaulting a personal best 4.71m/15-05.50 to earn 822 more points.
Booth ended the decathlon competition by running another personal best in the men's decathlon 1,500 meters, where he finished second in 4:35.13. Booth's final decathlon result of 7,680 points bests his previous personal best of 7,602 set at the Big 12 Championships on May 10-11, while also moving into eighth all-time in K-State decathlon history. Booth also earns his second-consecutive All-America honor, after placing 14th, scoring 7,458 points at the NCAA Championships a season ago.
In the women's 4x100 meter relay semifinal, the K-State relay team of Taishia Pryce, Asha Cave, Ranae McKenzie and Lavaun Stephenson placed 20th overall by running a 44.43 out of heat one. The time was the second-fastest recorded by a Wildcat team this season, after the K-State 4x100 placed as the runner-up at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in 44.33.
In the women's hammer throw, junior Helene Ingvaldsen placed 21st overall by recording a top throw of 60.69m/199-01, which came on her first attempt.
