K-State Earns Ninth Straight AVCA Team Academic Award
Jul 22, 2019 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the ninth straight year, Kansas State volleyball was recognized with the 2018-19 Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), the organization announced Monday.
The honor, which is given to programs with a team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.30 or higher during the academic year, is the 17th in K-State volleyball history. The streak of nine consecutive honors extends the longest such stretch in program history, two better than a streak of seven straight awards from 2001-02 through 2007-08.
The team accolade caps another strong academic year for the Wildcats. In total, the group had 12 named Academic All-Big 12 First Team selections – a program record and most in the conference – while Brynn Carlson, Reilly Killeen and Mckenzi Weber each turned in a perfect 4.0 GPA. Additionally, 11 Wildcats earned Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll in the spring.
The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in 1992-93, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 GPA on a 5.0 scale. This year, an all-time high 977 teams received the award, including 189 in Division I.
K-State was one of five Big 12 schools, along with Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech and West Virginia, to earn the 2018-19 AVCA Team Academic Award.
K-State is set to return eight letterwinners from last year's squad, including seniors Sarah Dixon and Weber. The Cats retain 2018 AVCA All-America Honorable Mention selections in Dixon and Gloria Mutiri.
K-State's home opener will be Thursday, September 5 against Clemson at 6 p.m. The matchup with the Tigers kicks off the annual K-State Invitational, which will be played September 5-7 in Bramlage Coliseum. The Cats will also host Missouri in an exhibition on August 24 at 3 p.m. at Ahearn Field House.
Season tickets for the 2019 campaign, which start at less than $3 per match, are now on sale. Fans can purchase season tickets by visiting K-StateSports.com/tickets, calling 1-800-221-CATS or stopping by the K-State Athletics Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum.
