K-State Comeback Falls Short on Thursday Night
Aug 29, 2019 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – On the opening night of the new Buser Family Park, Kansas State scored an equalizing goal before halftime, but Arkansas State used one of its two second half shots to secure the win on Thursday night, 2-1.
Arkansas State (1-1-0) captured the first goal of the night in the 28th minute. Sarah Sodoma dribbled the ball to the end line before crossing a pass into the six-yard box. The ball found the foot of Hailey Furio, who tapped in from close range.
K-State (0-2-1) answered in the 38th minute to even the match. Brookelynn Entz eluded a Red Wolves defender on the right corner of the 18-yard box. Entz found Hannah Davis wide open in the middle of the box. Davis gathered and blasted her shot into the lower right corner.
The goal was the first of the season for Davis and the fourth of her career. It was her first goal since August 19, 2018, against Oakland. The junior from Lincoln, Nebraska, is tied for fourth in program history for career goals.
Kansas State outshot the Red Wolves in the second half, 17-2. K-State threatened the Arkansas State net for almost the entirety of the final 45 minutes, but were unable to tally either the game-tying or game-winning goals.
Arkansas State's game-winning goal was tallied in the 60th minute. The Red Wolves sent a high arching free kick into the 18-yard box from midfield. The ball was misplayed on a header and rolled into open space. Arkansas State's Sophia Restrepo collected the ball and finished into the lower left of the goal.
K-State is winless in its last 12 matches (0-11-1). The loss on Thursday night extends K-State's home losing streak to eight straight matches. The last home victory for the Wildcats came on August 23, 2018 against Drake.
Arkansas State goalkeeper Megan McClure recorded five saves, while K-State's Rachel Harris pocketed two.
The Wildcats ended the night with a 27-5 advantage in total shots, but a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Each team attempted six corner kicks.
Kansas State will end the home-opening weekend on Sunday afternoon, as the Wildcats host South Dakota State at 1 p.m. Sunday's match is part of a "Wildcat Weekend," as fans can purchased a general admission ticket for $3 when you show your football ticket from Saturday's game against Nicholls State. What They Said
K-State Head Coach Mike Dibbini
On the sideline's energy following Hannah Davis's injury….
"It was deflating. (When) we have one of our offensive threats that goes down, it's tough. Especially when you're trying to build it. I think she scored the first one. It's tough losing her in the game. Let's pray that she gets back."
On how Hannah Davis affects the offense…
"She's a huge, integral part of the offense. She's dynamic and she creates chances for us. It's tough and unfortunate that we lost her there."
On the difficulty of accepting the loss knowing the team had many chances to score…
"It's a tough one to swallow. I felt like obviously we were the better team. The lack of execution, I mean we had chances. It's just one of those tough matches to be involved in. You do everything right, but the goal wasn't being nice to us today. The ball was hitting the post, the frame. Last leg, last every stick and nail, it's just one of those ones that it's tough to overcome."
On it being the first game in Buser Family Park…
"It's nice. It's great to be here in front of the crowd. The fans were great. It's definitely memorable as far as being closer to the fans as well as getting their energy. It's a nice venue; we're blessed and grateful for it. We're excited for it to completely be finished on the inside as well."
On the team's lone goal…
"We were patient, composed, and executed our good chances. We had a lot of those, it was just a matter of one more extra pass or, the ball (was) inches away from going in. We did everything to win that game. We just lacked a little bit of luck."
On the unfortunate bounce of Arkansas State's second goal…
"We lost focus a little bit defensively on winning the first and second ball and defending that ball out of the air. That's an area that we have to continue to work on. It's tough when you lose players that played significant minutes last year back there and you're still trying to find players that can come in and help us; that will step in and fill those minutes."
On whether it being the first game in Buser Family Park added importance to the game…
"(We're) just trying to get better. I think we did get better, we just lacked execution in the goal. I thought we dominated the game. I thought we were much much better with our urgency, especially in the second half. It's the game of soccer, that's a tough game to lose for sure."
K-State Junior Midfielder Brookelynn Entz
On how the team recovered from Hannah Davis's injury…
"We were in that huddle, we were just saying 'Let's do it for Hannah.' We couldn't get it done. We had chance after chance after chance. On paper, they had the W, but honestly if I was watching this game not seeing the score, I would think we would win probably 5-0. It's just up to us to execute the chances that we have. We have to put those games away. We have to win those games that we're clearly better than the other team."
On what prevented the team from executing their chances to score…
"I don't know. It was just one of those games when we got unlucky. I had one go off the post. Balls were bouncing weird. It was just one of those games. That happens, but we can't let that happen. We have to get the ball in the net. That's where we're at right now."
On what Hannah Davis does well for the team…
"I heard Kat say it when we were watching film: Any ball you play Hannah, she's gonna make it look good. She can use her speed, get behind the defense, and she can get something out of nothing. That's what I really appreciate about Hannah. We connect really well. She's always there for me when I put the ball in the box and she's always there to finish it for me. I love having her on the field. I'm hoping she's okay so she can get back out here and help us out."
On what she saw on her assist to Hannah Davis…
"I wasn't honestly thinking at all. I think that's when I play my best; when I'm just not thinking. I don't know what happened. I just saw Hannah and knew that she would finish it for me."
On the significance of it being the first game in Buser Family Park…
"I was so excited for this game. Just to play in this amazing facility, it just ups the game a little bit, gets the fans excited. It makes us feel like we're really at a Power 5 school. Now we just have to make sure that we win these games that we're supposed to win and really show that we do belong in the Power 5 and that we can compete at this level."
On being on the team for the stadium's opening season…
"This an amazing opportunity. This is one of the reasons that I came to K-State, because I thought it was such a cool opportunity to be here and start a new program and have all this stuff. It's just awesome."
On if she felt the responsibility to score fell on her following Davis's injury…
"I just felt like we needed to get a goal. Whoever got a goal, it doesn't matter. We just needed to get a result. If we had tied the game up, we would have won. We would've came to overtime and just put them away. We were waiting for somebody, anybody to score and we had the chances."
On if she needs to fill Davis's role moving forward…
"Obviously I want to score, but I want to win more than I want to score. Whoever scores doesn't matter to me. I just want to get those Ws on the record."
K-State Senior Forward Katie Cramer
On accepting the loss following Hannah Davis's injury…
"Losing Hannah is something that's really tough. She's a hard worker. She brings a lot of energy to the table every single game. You saw her. She should have had two goals today, if not more if she would've stayed out there. It's really tough for us. We're gonna have to sell out for the rest of the year for her."
On the significance of it being the first game in Buser Family Park, specifically before the game…
"It was definitely on my mind a lot. (There was) a little bit of pressure, good pressure though, I like it. I thought we would come out with a little bit more energy, myself mostly. I just felt like my energy wasn't there, I don't know why or what, but that's on me. Being a captain, I can't let that happen. Playing in front of this is incredible. It's a dream come true. Being here for four years and then finally seeing this happen so quick and have a big crowd like that, for any player, that's a dream come true."
On "good pressure"...
"Pressure that gives you spirit to be out there. The good kind."
On how the team can convert more shots to goals in the future…
"I think being confident in our shot. We do all the hard work, we get there, we get the cross off. I think we're thinking about it too much. Sometimes we just need to go out there and play like we did when we were 7 and 8 growing up and we were just putting it in the back of the net every time we touched the ball. I think it just has to be that confidence and knowing if you miss it there's gonna be a girl behind you that's gonna get it and put it in. That's just repetition and practice and mind games. Figuring it out in our head, mostly."
On if the team's missed shots usually are made in practice…
"Yeah, for sure. They should always go in."
On if she'll look back on the night and be proud to have been on the team when the stadium's opening season…
"Oh absolutely. Like I said before, being here for four years and watching this turn into this. I mean, wow. The K-State family is incredible and I can't believe we have this and how nice it is. We would've loved to have had anything, but we get this, and that's crazy."
On if the new stadium legitimizes the program…
"It makes us feel like we're real. We're here. We're not just the new team. We have a home and we're actually the K-State soccer team. People know who we are and people drive by and they're like 'Oh, we actually have a soccer team.' We definitely feel established. We take a lot of pride in that. I know we haven't won the past couple of games, but we put our heart out in that game. It just comes down to finishing them all."
