MANHATTAN, Kansas – With a goal in each half, Kansas State soccer pocketed its first win of the 2019 season and ended an extended winless stretch on Sunday afternoon at Buser Family Park with a 2-0 decision over South Dakota State.
Sunday's win snapped an overall 12-match winless streak (0-11-1) dating back to the final nine matches of the 2019 season. K-State also snapped an eight-match home losing streak, as K-State's last home victory before Sunday came on August 23, 2018, against Drake.
Kansas State (1-2-1) recorded six shots on goal in the first half. The Wildcats were unable to convert its first five solid attempts, but tallied the first goal of the match in the 45th minute.
Freshman Jenna Brown popped a ball up into the air, landing in the South Dakota State 18-yard box. The ball bounced high into the air and was deflected by a Jackrabbits defender. The ball then bounced off the ankle of K-State senior Ashley Zane and over the fingertips of South Dakota State goalkeeper Maggie Smither.
The goal was the first of the season for Zane and the fourth of her career. Zane ranks tied for fourth in program history for career goals scored.
South Dakota State (2-2-0) nearly tied the match with 10 seconds remaining in the opening half. Reagan Anderson fired a shot from 25 yards and rang the crossbar with the effort.
Kansas State was able to register a crucial insurance goal in the 58th minute. Freshman Caylee Thornhill brought the ball into the Jackrabbits' attacking zone. Thornhill then dished to senior Laramie Hall who finished her shot from the right side of the frame roughly 15 yards away.
This was Hall's fourth career goal and her first since her freshman season in 2016. She also moved into a tie for fourth in program history for career goals. The product of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, ranks fourth in program history for career points with 14.
Senior goalkeeper Emma Malsy registered her second shutout of 2019 and the eighth of her K-State career. Malsy finished with four saves on the afternoon.
For the second straight match, K-State recorded 20 or more shots and held a 23-11 advantage in total shots. The Wildcats held a 12-4 lead in shots on goal. South Dakota State edged past K-State in corner kicks, 5-4.

What They Said
MIKE DIBBINI, HEAD COACH
On the game...
"I thought we played well. I thought we played well all weekend and today we got the bounces that we needed. We were in control of this game. They had some transition moments but we did a good job of slowing that up. We stayed to the game plan and obviously we had a couple of goals and plenty of chances as well. I am pleased that the players off the bench gave us a spark today because that was critical. They deserve this win."
On Ashley Zane and Laramie Hall's goals...
"They were at the right place at the right time and attacked well. They were hungry to be on the field and get a shot off in front of the goal. Ashley's especially, it has been a long journey for her and she sacrificed her body for that goal."
On Emma Malsy's performance….
"Like I said we just keep rotating the players. Both Emma and Rachel (Harris) are great goalkeepers. They bring us presence and experience. Emma kept us organized."
On what to accomplish in Southern California…
"Keep building on our momentum as far as offense and creating chances. Also keep figuring out and getting better on transition defense moments."
On snapping winless streak…
"Like I said it is good and feels good and the players deserve it. They have been working really really hard and this win was meant for them."
ASHLEY ZANE, SENIOR, MIDFIELDER
On her goal…
"I just saw her head it and I knew it was going to be a battle in the box. Coach always wants energy and I had ten minutes in the game so I just gave it my all and went up for that header and it hit off my ankle somehow and went over her head. I saw it go into the back of the net. Our team is all about desire and fight and I knew coming in I wanted to give that for the team. I was surprised because usually you have a wide open goal and it is not congestion. You do not see goals in the air like that and happen to go in after bouncing over the goalie's head."
On Hannah Davis…
"Hannah is a huge part of our team and obviously her being out hurts us. I think that is also encouraging us more to play for her. We know what her energy looks like so we need to show that same energy for her. She scored a lot of goals for us so we want to return that favor. She worked so hard for us on Thursday night in our opener so it is encouraging to see her play like that."
On breaking winless streak…
"In our games we were competing and had a ton of opportunities we just did not have the results to show for it. So seeing that result is going to help us heading into California and the Big 12 season. Having that winning mentality is going to be big. We have all the pieces so if we can bring that mentality everytime then we will do well this year."
LARAMIE HALL, SENIOR, FORWARD/MIDFIELDER
On scoring another goal after a questionable call on a shot on goal…
"Honestly, the motivation was there the whole time but definitely after the first one I was like 'oh my gosh.' So then I was like okay, okay, let's keep trucking. The first one kind of confirmed what we already know as a team so it was kind of an affirmation to continue to do what we were already doing."
On what she saw during her goal…
"I kind of saw the gap between the center back and outside back. I love playing gaps and Bailey (Nemechek) played a dime and before that the girls that won the ball and played it up the field. I was like that was the closest I am going to get so I am going to rip it so I did."
On California trip...
"Our goal is to go out there and get six points which is two wins. So we need to take everything we have learned these past three or four games and apply it to that to get the win and keep our momentum going forward."
