K-State Wins Red Bull USA Basketball 3X East Regional
Sep 16, 2019 | Women's Basketball
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State women's basketball sent a four-woman squad to Queen College in New York City over the weekend and the Wildcats came returned with some hardware, as the Red Bull USA Basketball 3X East Regional champions.
K-State was represented by senior Jasauen Beard, junior Rachel Ranke, sophomore Christianna Carr and redshirt freshman Ayoka Lee. Lee was happy to bring the title back to the Little Apple with her teammates.
"We were all excited to have this experience to travel to New York and play in the (Red Bull USA Basketball) 3X Regional. We didn't know what to expect going into the tournament. We knew it wasn't going to be other college teams, it could really be anyone and any style of play. We have been playing 3x3 a lot this summer and to be able to transfer what we have been practicing and apply to a competitive setting, and on top of that come away with a win, is just amazing"
In attendance at the event was basketball Hall of Famer and USA Basketball legend Chris Mullin. Mullin was impressed by K-State during the day.
"I loved the women's team today from K-State. They played such a high-level game. You could really see the chemistry. It's great to see college teams coming as a group."
The Wildcats captured Pool B play with a pair of wins. With the Pool B crown, K-State automatically advanced to the semifinals. The Wildcats then cruised through the semifinals and secured the title with a 21-10 win over Team Fordham, a delegation from Fordham University.
"The experience was surreal," said Jasauen Beard. "The way we played together was amazing, the outcome was amazing. Just the feeling of knowing we qualified for USA 3x3 Nationals and knowing that there is a chance we could play for Team USA in the Olympics is still unbelievable. I can honestly say that I am extremely thankful and proud of my team because hard work truly pays off."
Carr echoed Beard sentiments about the competition.
"I really enjoyed my experience for not only myself but the experience with my teammates. We worked so hard for this and I'm happy that we went to New York and did what we were supposed to do and that was win. We played together great and the opportunity to compete in nationals this spring is surreal."
The players are competing to accumulate enough individual FIBA points with the goal of moving on to the
Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals in April of 2020, where 24 men's and 24 women's teams will be on display.
From that event, USA Basketball will select four players — not necessarily all from one championship team — for the men's and women's teams that will play in Tokyo less than a year from now, should the USA qualify, as 3x3 makes its Olympic debut.
The 2020 Summer Olympics 3x3 competition will be played on a half court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock, where the winner is the first team to 21 points or the team in the lead at the end of the 10-minute regulation.
K-State returns nine letter winners from the 2018-19 season for the 2019-20 season, led by the trio of senior Peyton Williams, Ranke and Carr. The Wildcats will also welcome in graduate transfer Angela Harris, Lee and freshmen Emma Chapman, Emilee Ebert and Jada Thorpe.
K-State women's basketball season tickets for the 2019-20 season are available now for purchase. For more information on season ticket packages for the Wildcats' 17-game home schedule, contact the K-State Athletics Ticket Office by calling 1-800-221-CATS or visit www.kstatesports.com/tickets.
