K-State Falls to Seventh-Ranked BYU
Sep 21, 2019 | Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State wrapped up the non-conference portion of its 2019 schedule on Saturday night at Buser Family Park, as the Wildcats faced seventh-ranked BYU. The Cougars defended their ranking with a 5-0 win over the Wildcats.
Kansas State falls to 2-5-2 on the season, while BYU improves to 8-0-0 and has only surrendered one goal on the season.
"That was a really good team there," said K-State head coach Mike Dibbini. "I've got to give them credit, they're undefeated and have only given up one goal for a reason, you saw it right there. We tried to match them up and we were down 1-0 at half, which I thought was a positive.
"Once they scored their second goal, then the wheels kind of fell off but we kept trying. A positive is that we got to look at a lot of players that we don't normally get to look at all year to see how they compete against a top-10 team. It gives us some good feedback. But that was a really good team there, probably the best I've seen since we started this program."
BYU (8-0-0) did not wait long to give themselves the lead. The Cougars scored in the 5th minute, as Cameron Tucker carried the ball for over 30 yards before firing a shot from 23 yards into the lower right corner of the net.
Tucker struck again in the 48th minute to give BYU a 2-0 lead. The Cougars' Jamie Shepherd played Tucker into the 18-yard box to the right post. Tucker bashed her shot into the left side of the frame from 12 yards out.
Tucker completed her hat trick in the 59th minute. BYU's Lizzy Braby deflected a cross and the ball landed at Tucker's feet. She then finished into the open frame.
BYU added goals in the 70th and 85th minutes to cap the scoring.
BYU registered a 29-9 advantage in total shots including a 13-2 lead in shots on goal. BYU tallied a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Kansas State begins Big 12 action on Thursday against defending league champion Baylor at 7 p.m., and Sunday, September 29, against Texas at 1 p.m. Thursday's match is "Old Town Road" Night. Overall thoughts…

But that was a really good team there, probably the best I've seen since we started this program."
On the players he got to see play...
"Just some of the younger players that don't normally come off the bench like Alisha Buckingham and getting Maguire (Sullivan) back in the mix to see how she does. Shannon Dukes in the mix, and Taylor Gardner, just some of those players that haven't had the minutes that they had in the past just to give them some time. It was an opportunity for us to try to compete with this team, we did for one half. The second half I felt like their depth showed and once they scored that second one we didn't have the same desire we had in the past to comeback, that team was really good and put it away."
On how he felt at halftime...
"The game could've been 3 or 4 zero down in the first half as well, we dodged some bullets. I mean that team is very good, I've got to give them credit. We didn't prepare them as well as we should have and we thought we had a good game plan and we dodged a lot of bullets, 1-0 down first half but like I said, they kept coming and we couldn't survive that second half and the wheels fell off."
On how going down 2 or 3 affects the way they play...
"It's tough to find momentum, to find the momentum to have a desire to play ball when it's tough. Especially against a team that's only given up one goal all year. They were really solid. We could look at it in so many different ways, we could talk about it in so many different ways but mine is we tried to compete, we did some really good things, but the team we played over there is very good."
On Cameron Tucker's hat trick…
"She's shifty, she creates plays on her own, she's deceptive, she's got cheeky moves. The whole team was good, it wasn't just one player. They were very solid and they have a really good bench."
On keeping Emma Malsy's head up…
"We just have to forget about this game now. There's nothing we can say or do to change it. We've got to put this behind us and learn from it and move forward."
On how the bench players did…
"I thought there were some good moments and there were a lot of moments that we had to work on things."
