MANHATTAN, Kan. – With the indoor season in full swing, the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams continue their recent road trip as both squads travel down to Wichita, Kansas for the annual KU-KSU-WSU Triangular on Saturday, January 18.
The KU-KSU-WSU Triangular starts at 10:30 a.m., CT on Saturday morning with field events and then the teams will compete on the track at 2 p.m., CT. There will be 16 total events that will take place inside the Heskett Center.
"There are not nearly as many of these types of meets as years ago," said Director of Track and Field Cliff Rovelto. "I enjoy scored meets and particularly with rivals in the state or otherwise. I believe we have athletes that enjoy great competitions and welcome challenges. Like most teams at this time of the year, we are dealing with some illness, nicks and some rust from the holiday break. But we look forward to getting after it. We are blessed to have some versatile athletes and folks who aren't afraid to compete in events outside their normal comfort range so this weekend will be great for our team's development."
Some of these versatile athletes include senior sprinter Jullane Walker and sophomore runner Kassidy Johnson, both of which received Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors for their performances last weekend at the Jim Green Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky.
Walker, who completed the 60-meter dash with a scorching time of 6.66, claimed a third-place finish in the final round of the event. His sprint of 6.66 places him first among Big 12 participants and fourth in the nation this year in the 60-meter dash.
"It felt pretty good," said Walker. "The execution of the race was my best since I have been here and it was a good start, good drive, good finish. It felt way different from other races, so I feel like that is what we have been working for all season."
Johnson, who out-paced the competition during the women's mile run, crossed the line at 4:48.00 while garnering a first-place finish for the Wildcats. Her time of 4:48.00 leads the Big 12 for the 2019-20 campaign.
"I'm kind of spread out between the 800, 1,000 and the mile," said Johnson. "So, really just always going for personal records. I'm just trying to get faster in each thing and really improve speed and be able to cut times down a little bit, improve consistency between laps to be able to knock off any time possible. Also, I'm really just trying to learn how to really push myself and race well, but still have fun. It's supposed to be enjoyable, so I'm trying to keep it that way."
Competing in three meets thus far for the 2019-20 indoor season, K-State has seen numerous first place performances with certain athletes also setting personal records along with entering the top-10 in school history for their respective events.
The Wildcats have now earned 14 first-place finishes through the end of the Jim Green Invitational last Saturday.
Current and former K-State athletes hold meet records for the Triangular, as Walker and junior Tejaswin Shankar both are listed in the record books as Walker is tied with former K-State sprinter Terrell Smith in the 60-meter dash at 6.75, while Shankar sits at the top of the high jump competition with a leap of 2.25m/7-04.04.
Former Wildcats A'Keyla Mitchell and Akela Jones possess four records amongst them, with Mitchell garnering the top marks in the 60-meters (7.37) and 200 meters (23.95) while Jones holds the 60-meter hurdles (8.18) and the long jump marks (6.50m/21-04.00).
Other notable Wildcats who have left their mark in previous meets at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular include: Tyrone Watkins (400 Meters, 47.88), Joseph Lee (600 Yards, 1:09.71), Erik Sproll (800 Meters, 1:50.40), Korene Hinds (Mile, 4:42.81), Breanna Eveland (Pole Vault, 4.24m/13-11.25) and Gwen Wentland (1.87m/6-.02.00).
