K-State Runs Away with KU-KSU-WSU Triangular Victory on Saturday
Jan 18, 2020 | Track & Field
WICHITA, Kan. – In a showdown of the best track and field programs in the state, the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams pulled away with the victory in the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular, compiling 254.5 points on Saturday at the Heskett Center. K-State secured 12 victories on the day, giving the team the edge over fellow in-state rivals Wichita State (221) and Kansas (191.5).
"Very pleased with our effort in general," said Director of Track and Field Cliff Rovelto. "To win a meet like this against quality competition I feel like we need to do three things. One, we need to win as many events as possible. We did a nice job of that. Two, we need folks who are willing to do multiple events and we had a number of athletes do more than just one event and competed in all. Third, we need some folks to do some things out of their comfort range and we had that as well. We had some nice individual performances but more importantly, we had a great team effort."
The Wildcats had great performances on the track in the latter part of the day, which were led by sophomore Kassidy Johnson, junior Macy Heinz and senior Travis Hodge, who all earned victories in their respective events. Johnson paced herself to the victory in the 1000-meter race with a new personal record of 2:47.35, while jumping up to the No. 3 spot all time in K-State indoor history. Her first-place finish also set the Triangular 1000-meter record.
Heinz and Hodges both ran past the competition en route to first-place finishes in the 800-meter race. Heinz broke her own personal record in the event and moved up to No. 8 all-time with her pace of 2:09.67. Hodge bolted past the other participants on the men's side with a time of 1:52.84 to complete the sweep for K-State in the 800-meter event.
Sophomore Antoni Hoyte-Small closed the deal in the men's 600-yard event by beating out Kansas' Cody Johnson by less than a second to earn the top spot at the podium with a time of 1:14.09. Freshman Gabriel Louw and senior Kyle Parr both rounded out the lineup for K-State in the event, as Louw finished third at a 1:14.90 pace and Parr took home a fifth-place finish in 1:16.14. The women's 600-yard race featured sophomore Alex Ferguson, who took second place with a time of 1:23.16, while freshman Pippa Earley climbed into the top-five at 1:28.55.
Running shorter distances for the Wildcats but still leaving a similar impact were seniors Ariel Okorie, Jullane Walker and Wurrie Njadoe. Okorie outlasted teammate Vitoria Alves in the 60-meter hurdles by a tenth of a second to secure the victory, while the team performed in the 60 meters with Walker finishing third in the men's event with a time of 6.74 and Njadoe (7.57) and Kimisha Chambers (7.58) placing second and third, respectively, in the women's event.
The Wildcats saw several athletes post personal records in the field while picking up key victories in the high jump, shot put, weight throw and triple jump categories.
Freshman Kyle Alcine posted a new personal mark in the high jump at 2.18m/7-01.75, taking home the top spot. Freshmen Janique Burgher and Maddie Righter placed in the top-five in the women's high jump, as Burgher clinched a spot at second place with a height of 1.75m/5-08.75 while Righter followed in fourth place at 1.70m/5-07.00.
The team put on a clinic in the shot-put competition as senior Cameron Lewis and freshman Urte Bacianskaite both notched victories in the event. Lewis launched a top throw of 17.42m/57-02.00 to take the crown for the men's competition, while Bacianskaite claimed the victory after a throw of 14.43m/47-04.25, which is also a new personal best for the Panevezys, a native of Lithuania.
K-State dominated both the men's and women's weight throw competitions on Saturday, as senior Helene Ingvaldsen grabbed the top spot with a 20.13/66-00.50 mark while senior Ashely Petr launched a throw at 19.95m/65-05.50 to help the Wildcats earn 12 points in the event with her second-place performance. Junior Colin Echols cemented his spot at the top of the men's weight throw event as he would launch a throw of 18.63m/61-01.50 to earn top honors while senior Cameron Lewis fell just short but gave K-State a second-place performance with a mark of 18.03m/59-02.00.
"Weight throw went really well today," said Lewis. "Overall, a really great day. I got a personal best in the shot put in a really good competition. It's a great start to the indoor season. All I can expect is more PRs from our team and try to continuing dominating every meet we go to."
The triple jump competition favored the Wildcats, as senior Konstantina Romaiou and junior Tejaswin Shankar out leaped the other Jayhawk and Shocker participants for another sweep in the field. Romaiou bested the field with a leap of 12.47m/40-11.00 to lock up the victory on the women's event, while Shankar, who competed in his first triple jump event at K-State, showed no inexperience in his triple jump win with a mark of 15.07m/49-05.50.
Heading to the end of the meet, K-State saw productive performances in the 3000-meter races, 200-meter races and the mile run. Freshman Jaybe Shufelberger and junior Cara Melgares crossed the line during the 3000-meter event in second and third places, respectively, with Shufelberger closing the race at 9:58.25 and Melgares following at 10:00.46. Sophomore Cooper Schroeder had a runner-up performance in the men's 3000 meter-run with a time of 8:33.05.
Flip flopping spots in the women's 200-meter event, Chambers finished ahead of Njadoe this time around at a time of 24.45 to grab a spot in second while Njadoe crossed the line in third in 24.89.
K-State had top-three performances in the 400 meters from senior Lauren Taubert and senior Justin Davis. Taubert clinched a spot in second place in her first indoor 400-meter competition at a time of 56.56, while teammates Lavaun Stephenson and Akia Guerrier both took the fifth and sixth spots during the race. Davis crossed the line in third place on the men's side at 49.63 with freshman Tim Lambert finishing a tenth of a second behind in fourth place.
Senior Noah Stevenson nearly beat his own personal record in the 1000-meter race, crossing the line at 2:29.41 for second place. Freshman Hadley Splechter was able to garner a spot in third place with his pace of 2:30.75.
For the mile run, senior Emma Wren and freshman Emma Lucas locked up top-five finishes in the women's race while junior Ethan Powell finished third and sophomore Kerby Depenbusch filled the sixth spot for K-State in the men's race.
One last event took place before the Wildcats could be deemed the champions of the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular as the team competed in the men's and women's 4x400 meter relay. K-State closed the meet with a runner-up performance in the event, closing the race with a 3:32.33 pace.
Ending their stay in Wichita, Kansas, the Wildcats now turn their attention to the second home meet of the indoor season, as the DeLoss Dodds Invitational will return next week on Friday, January 24 through Saturday, January 25 in Ahearn Field House.
