K-State Wraps Up Regular Season at OSU Invite Saturday
Oct 14, 2020 | Cross Country
MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the second time in as many weeks, the Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the OSU Cross Country Course, as both groups will look to continue their recent momentum at the OSU Invite this Saturday (October 17) in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The OSU Invite will be the final regular season meet for the Wildcats before the Big 12 Championship on Friday, October 30 at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kansas.
"We need to continue to run smart, which means be aggressive but make sure our effort is as strong at the end of the race as it is at the beginning," said head coach Ryun Godfrey. "Focus and belief in one's own ability is paramount for us to improve as team. This meet is one more opportunity to learn, to focus, and believe!"
It will be a packed field once again at the OSU Cross Country Course, as the OSU Invite will feature two other Big 12 programs (Oklahoma and Oklahoma State), along with seven non-conference foes (BYU, NAU, Oklahoma Christian, Southern Utah, Utah Valley State, Weber State and UTEP). The men's 8k race starts at 9 a.m., CT, and then the women's 6k meet begins shortly after at 9:50 a.m., CT.
The races this weekend will not feature conference foes Iowa State and Kansas for the first time all season, as K-State has gone head-to-head with both the Cyclones and the Jayhawks in each of its first two meets in 2020.
A prominent course for events, the OSU Cross Country Course has been the host of two Big 12 Championships (2010 and 2015) and the home of four NCAA Midwest Regional events (1996, 2003, 2008 and 2019).
A successful trip at the Cowboy Jamboree on October 3 gives K-State high aspirations riding into the OSU Invite on Saturday, as both teams will look to capture their third consecutive top-three finish of the 2020 season. The third-place performances marked the best finishes from both teams at the Jamboree since the 2016 season, as the men tallied 104 points to finish behind the host Cowboys and Iowa State, while the women's team collected 90 points to finish behind the Cyclones and Cowgirls.
The Wildcats have performed well in recent trips at the OSU Cross Country Course with neither squad finishing lower than eighth place since 2015.
Sophomore Jaybe Shufelberger was one of two Wildcats to finish in the Top 10 of the women's 6k run at the Jamboree, as she finished fourth with a time of 21:43.1. Her fourth-place performance in the 6k race marked her best finish in any meet during her Purple and White career.
Teammate Kassidy Johnson followed up Shufelberger's outing with a top-10 finish of her own, as the Wichita, Kansas, product notched a spot at 10th overall with a pace of 22:04.5.
Redshirt sophomore Kerby Depenbusch took charge for the men's team in the 8k race and closed out his day with a new personal best time of 25:01.5 to finish 16th to highlight four men's runners in the Top 25. He was joined by senior Noah Stevenson (19th, 25:06.1), sophomore Hadley Splechter (22nd, 25:10.7) and junior Stephen Kielhofner (23rd, 24:14.9) in the Top 25, which helped ignite K-State to a third-place team finish.
K-State completed its first trip in Stillwater with nine personal records amongst the men's and women's teams. Those runners included Depenbusch, Kielhofner, sophomore Jack Moore (25:59.2) and freshman Aiden Higgerson (26:31.6) for the men, while sophomore Hannah Stewart (22:39.3), freshman Emma Lucas (22:54.0), sophomore Sydney Burton (23:02.2), sophomore Cailan Steward (23:30.8) and freshman McKenna Polus (23:50.8) all performed well in the women's race.
Results will be made available on www.kstatesports.com and K-State Track & Field and Cross Country social media accounts following the conclusion of Saturday's races.
