K-State Goes Cold in Loss to Idaho State

Dec 08, 2020 | Women's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State needed a fourth quarter rally on Tuesday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum, but the Wildcats weren't able to overcome a chilly 11-minute scoreless span as Idaho State secured a 65-50 win.

Christianna Carr paced K-State (2-2) with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. The 24 points tied her career-high and were the most by a Wildcat this season. Her five 3-point field goals also tied a career-high, a mark she has hit three times.

Carr scored eight points in the first quarter, including a layup with 2:23 remaining in the opening quarter to give the Wildcats a 15-14 lead. A pair of free throws from Ashley Ray put K-State in front 17-14 at the end of the first quarter. K-State held Idaho State scoreless for the final 3:26 of the quarter.

Carr knocked down her third 3-pointer of the afternoon with 5:35 remaining in the second quarter to give K-State a 24-20 lead. A layup from Idaho State at 5:15 completed the scoring in the second frame as the both teams went scoreless for the final 5:14. The Wildcats registered three blocks during the stretch with two from Emilee Ebert.

Idaho State (2-1) broke the scoring drought for both teams, scoring the first five points of the third quarter to pull in front 27-24, with 7:59 remaining in the quarter. The Bengals would use a 16-0 run to open the third quarter to hold a 38-24 lead with 5:05 to play.

K-State would end an 11-minute scoring drought, as Carr completed an old fashioned 3-point play with 4:12 remaining in the third quarter to bring K-State to with 11 points, 38-27.

After going 0-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first half, the Bengals were 7-of-9 from deep on their way to outscoring K-State in the third quarter, 29-8, to take a 51-32 lead into the fourth quarter.

Carr knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, then finished a layup followed by a Sydney Goodson steal and layup, as the Wildcats used a 10-0 run to pull within nine, 51-42, with 6:16 remaining in the fourth quarter.

An old-fashioned three-point play from freshman Taylor Lauterbach brought the Wildcats within seven, 52-45, with 5:20 to play. Lauterbach finished the afternoon with four points, a career-high 16 rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Idaho State would increase its lead back to 15, 60-45, on the back of an 8-0 run over a four-minute stretch to seal the win.

For the afternoon, K-State shot 30.0 percent (18-of-60) from the field including 20.0 percent (6-of-30) from 3-point range. Idaho State shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the floor including 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from beyond the arc.

What They Said

JEFF MITTIE, K-STATE HEAD COACH

On Lee's injury status…
"If you take a hopeful side  of this, it's day to day. If you take the negative side of it, I think we have to make sure that it's not a lingering issue. She's making progress. Is it going to be enough to play on Thursday, we won't know until Thursday because she won't be able to practice prior to that. I don't think we can practice her before that, because I would expect that when she does play, it would take a step back. She's in treatment about three times a day. I'll see her after the game here after I'm done with you guys."

On the third quarter...
"It didn't look like we were playing very hard. It looked like we were tentative in that stretch. Didn't have a lot of players playing with confidence. Defensively, we were not able to guard them at all in that stretch after guarding them pretty well in the first half. We just didn't look like we came out of halftime with a lot of fight. It was really disappointing coming out of there."

On Carr's performance...
"I thought Crissy (Carr) played really well, knocked some shots down obviously. She mixed her game up, got down inside some. I thought she made good, solid drives to the basket. I think she got tired in that fourth. I think there was a stretch where she was pretty tired. Obviously the early foul trouble for her in the second, we had to play her and I thought she played pretty smart in that stretch which was a positive. Overall, it was a really good performance by her."

SYDNEY GOODSON, SENIOR GUARD
On Idaho State's third quarter…
"Definitely give them respect. They definitely hit shots. They hit hard shots, as well. I just think a little of it we lacked on defense. We didn't have a lot of effort and a lot of energy, and that's something we need to adjust. It's not going to work, so that's going to be a big adjustment for us knowing that teams are going to be able to hit shots. We've got to be able to defend that better and not allow them to go on those runs."

On the team's offense right now…
"I think it's just a rhythm thing. I think we're still getting used to playing together. I think we're still working on the chemistry. It's going to be a work in progress. We have shooters, so we have to step up and hit those shots and shoot them with confidence. When you're in a funk, you have to shoot your way out. We're going to keep shooting, because we're shooters."

On a quick turnaround between games…
"I think the biggest thing is learning from our losses. We're not going to dwell on it. We're not going to hang our heads. We're onto the next. We play Thursday. We have a quick turnaround, so it's crucial that we learn from our mistakes and move forward and fix them for the next game."

On the Idaho State defense…
"They were definitely aggressive. I think more so it was us just not being on the same page and miscommunicating a lot on offense. We've gotta sharpen that up. They were disruptive for sure and got a couple of deflections, but that's on us. We have to make pass fakes and make better decisions. That's the biggest thing."

CHRISSY CARR, JUNIOR GUARD
On her offensive performance…
"Just finding it within the rhythm of the offense. Those two 3's that I hit back-to-back, those were within the plays. It's just taking my time to take and make the shot. Just being aggressive at the rim, as well. I honestly think that our ball movement does need to be better. I need to see the floor better, as well. The ball sticks and I forget that I'm holding the basketball and should pass it to somebody. But I think that's just going to come with practice. We have to have a quick turnaround for Thursday, because it's another game."

On the team's offense and gaining confidence…
"I think one thing we've been preaching a lot is quick ball movement. If we move the ball faster, we'd make the defense shift a little bit. I hate guarding a player that moves around a lot. I hate guarding a team that passes the ball really well and is always moving around, because that makes me work 10 times harder instead of a team that just stands around and waits. Think about the teams that play us and that we hate to guard, and we need to be like that. I just think practice and emphasis was on moving the ball quick to get things going on offense. We just need to keep that in the forefront of our brain to keep making that work."

On the quick turnaround for Thursday…
"I think there's a plus and a minus to our schedule being jam packed right now. The plus is when you have games like this, you don't have much time to dwell on the negativity of this loss. We'll go to practice tomorrow and have a scout for the next team. I think the bad thing about it, not really bad, but our bodies hurt sometimes. That's one of the things that we have to keep at the forefront of our brain is that we need to spend a little more time taking that commitment to spending more time on your body. Unlike a regular season where you can probably get away with not doing some things because you have a couple of days in between where you go to practice and then are done for the rest of the day. We don't have that right now, so making sure that we're doing everything right, hydrating, rolling out and stretching, getting in the cold tub if you need to, doing all the stuff you have to so we can have legs. That's one thing we're trying to focus on right now. Yeah, we lost and yeah it sucks, but you can feel it out for the next couple of hours but once we step into practice our mindset has to be on how we can beat South Dakota State. That's the only thing we need to focus on right now."
