K-State, Big 12 Unveil 2020 Volleyball Schedule
Aug 28, 2020 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State Athletics, in conjunction with the Big 12 Conference, today unveiled a 16-match conference-only schedule for the 2020 volleyball season.
In an effort to minimize travel, the league schedule has been altered to a two-match weekend series on consecutive days in a single location, as opposed to the customary home-and-home series schedule. The team that finishes the season with the highest winning percentage will be crowned Big 12 champion.
"I think, right now, we are just excited about the opportunity to play," head coach Suzie Fritz said. "The Big 12 and our administration, in particular, have done an amazing job of thinking about the health and safety of the student-athletes first. We have excellent protocols in place, both from an institutional and a Big 12 perspective, to make sure that we are going into events as protected and as safe as we possibly can be. As a program, we are optimistic about being able to play and being able to get through a season.
"The doubleheader format significantly reduces travel, so there will be some cost savings, but it helps keep our student-athletes at home and in familiar environments. Now we are going to have to play back to back each weekend, which is going to be a new challenge for us, in terms of being able to scout and recover and make changes quickly. It's a new challenge that is exciting and different."
K-State will host Iowa State at Bramlage Coliseum to open its 2020 campaign on Friday, September 25 and conclude the series on Saturday, September 26. The Wildcats, who are moving from their traditional home of Ahearn Field House for the upcoming year, will also welcome Oklahoma, Texas and TCU to Manhattan this season.
Tickets will be sold on a match-by-match basis and will be available for purchase beginning the day prior to the start of each series at K-StateSports.com/tickets or at the K-State Ticket Office on gameday. Fans are encouraged to order digital tickets in advance to help reduce lines at the ticket window.
There will be no season tickets for the 2020 season and season-ticket renewal information will be sent out to K-State volleyball season-ticket holders next year. Gameday policies and capacity limits for the upcoming season will be released at a later date.
Four teams on the Wildcats' 2020 schedule qualified for the 2019 NCAA Tournament in Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas. Baylor advanced to its first-ever Final Four while Texas reached the Round of 16. Both the Bears and Longhorns ended the year ranked in the top 10 of the AVCA Coaches' Poll.
Following the opening weekend, the Cats will travel to West Virginia (October 1-2) before a four-match home stand with Texas (October 16-17) and Oklahoma (October 22-23).
The 2020 edition of the Dillons Sunflower Showdown will be held at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena in Lawrence on October 29-30. The Wildcats and Jayhawks split the season series a year ago while K-State has taken three of the last four in the rivalry.
After a visit to Texas Tech to begin the month of November, K-State will prepare for its final home weekend against TCU on November 13-14. K-State's 2020 season concludes at Baylor November 20-21.
K-State is set to return nine letterwinners from last year's squad, including Brynn Carlson who led the Wildcats in kills and points. The Cats also retain starters Loren Hinkle, Dru Kuck, Jacque Smith and Megan Vernon.
The Cats bring in the nation's 23rd-ranked recruiting class, according to PrepVolleyball.com, which includes five freshmen to go with senior transfer setter Shelby Martin. It marks the third straight season K-State has boasted an incoming class ranked in the nation's top 30.
Details for this season's broadcast and promotions schedule will be announced at a later time.
