K-State Gears Up for Cowboy Jamboree Saturday

Sep 30, 2020 | Cross Country

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams will look to continue their hot starts to the season this weekend with the first of two meets in Stillwater, Oklahoma with the Cowboy Jamboree at the OSU Cross Country Course. This is the fourth time in five years the Wildcats will race in Stillwater with both squads capturing a combined four top-five finishes since 2015.
Ā
The Cowboy Jamboree will feature six other Big 12 programs (Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech), along with six non-conference foes (Central Arkansas, Missouri State, North Texas, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State and UTEP). The men's 8k race starts at 8:30 a.m., CT, and then the women's 6k meet begins shortly after at 9:15 a.m., CT.
Ā
One of the oldest races in the country, the Cowboy Jamboree has been a prominent race since its inauguration in 1937. For the course itself, the OSU Cross Country Course has also been the host of two Big 12 Championships (2010 and 2015) and the home of four NCAA Midwest Regional events (1996, 2003, 2008 and 2019).
Ā
"This weekend will be a very competitive meet with a majority of the conference teams competing," said head coach Ryun Godfrey. "I am looking forward to how the team responds to the challenge. Our preparation has gone well. We won't be at full strength, as a couple of people will sit out, but nevertheless, we look to compete well."
Ā
The Wildcats have performed well in recent trips to the Cowboy Jamboree, as neither squad has finished lower than eighth place dating back to the 2015 campaign. Three K-State athletes have previous experience competing at the Cowboy Jamboree, as seniors Noah Stevenson and Travis Hodge as well as redshirt junior Cara Melgares all ran back at the 2017 Cowboy Jamboree. Melgares finished 43rd overall in the women's 6k race, while Stevenson and Hodge sparked K-State to a seventh-place performance for the men's 8k meet.
Ā
Most of the Wildcats have familiarity with the OSU Cross Country Course, as 10 runners posted quality performances in 2019 NCAA Midwest Regional held at the course on November 15, 2019. Sophomore Jaybe Shufelberger locked in during the women's 6k race to capture a spot at 53rd overall, crossing the line at 21:59.0, which helped the K-State women to 23rd place team finish. Junior Cooper Schroeder pulled out a gritty time of 32:11.1 for the K-State men in the 10k meet, as he finished 57th overall to help the men to a 12th place finish.
Ā
Racing with Shufelberger in last season's NCAA Midwest Regional 6k meet was current Wildcats, senior Cayli Hume (126th, 22:56.0) and sophomores Hannah Stewart (143rd, 23:11.2), Delaney Kemp (179th, 23:45.9), and Cailan Steward (197th, 24:8.2). Schroeder was accompanied at last year's 10k race by current Wildcats, sophomores David Lutgen (74th, 32:29.9), Hadley Splechter (81st, 32:31.4) and Jack Thomas (112th, 33:06.1) and junior Kerby Depenbusch (152nd, 34:01.7).
Ā
K-State looked sharp in its first event of 2020, as the Wildcats went head-to-head with Iowa State and Kansas at the Bob Timmons Classic back on September 19 at Rim Rock Farm. Both teams locked up runner-up finishes in the 5k and 6k runs to kick off the young season, as juniors Cooper Schroeder and Kassidy Johnson led the way for their respective teams in the three-team quest.
Ā
Schroeder finished the men's 6k race in fourth place at a time of 18:26.9, which would end up being the fastest time recorded for any K-State men's runner during the 6k race at Rim Rock Farm since 1995. Johnson rolled her way to the fourth-overall spot in the women's 5k run, crossing the line at 18:09.0. Her mark of 18:09.0 is now the fastest mark at Rim Rock Farm for any K-State women's athlete.Ā
Ā
A total of 16 Wildcats darted to new personal bests during their respective races at the Bob Timmons Classic. Some of the notable runners who posted personal bests at Rim Rock Farm included Stevenson (4th, 18:27.9) and Depenbusch (10th, 18:51.4) in the men's 6k race, while Burton (11th, 18:44.6) and Steward (17th, 19:31.6) followed suit in the women's 5k race with their own personal records.
Ā
Results will be made available on www.kstatesports.com and K-State Track & Field and Cross Country social media accounts following the conclusion of Saturday's races.
