Jan 13, 2021 | Track & Field
IRVING, Texas – An explosive outing in the 60-meter hurdles during the Wildcat Invitational last weekend landed junior Vitoria Alves the victory in the race along with Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors, the conference announced today (January 13).
The Sao Paulo, Brazil, native jolted down the track in 8.22 seconds to capture the victory in the 60-meter hurdles, which was her first race of the 2020-21 season. Her time broke a personal best in the event set back in 2019 at the K-State Winter Invitational (8.35).
Nationally, Alves' performance catapulted her to the top spot in the NCAA, with the next closest athlete recording a time at 8.29 seconds.
"I just felt that I did a great job and finally had one of my goals accomplished for the year," Alves said after winning the race. "Last year I had a difficult time as I was not able to come back to the USA to practice with my team during the fall. However, I kept working hard and finally could come back and compete in my first meet."
This is Alves' first conference weekly accolade in her K-State career. The last time a Wildcat was tabbed as Big 12 Athlete of the Week during the indoor season came from teammate Taishia Pryce on the week of February 19, 2020.
K-State prepares to retain its KU-KSU-WSU Triangular crown this Saturday, January 16 inside Ahearn Field House, as Kansas and Wichita State arrive for the annual meet between all three programs.
