K-State Concludes Fall Schedule at the Steelwood Collegiate
Oct 29, 2021 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team returns to action for the final time this fall, as the Wildcats travel to Loxley, Alabama to compete in the Steelwood Collegiate held at the 7,096-yard Steelwood Country Club on Saturday and Sunday.
Â
"We are looking forward to competing at Steelwood this weekend. It's a strong field and a great golf course," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It's fairly tight off the tee, and if you drive it well, it sets you up for some good scoring opportunities."
Â
In their last outing, the Wildcats had a disappointing 10th-place finish at the Big 12 Match Play, but K-State will look to bounce back after a two-week break to finish its fall season on a high note.Â
Â
Tim Tillmanns, Will Hopkins, Cooper Schultz, Nicklaus Mason and Luke O'Neill make up the scoring lineup. This is the second time this season that Coach Robbins has utilized this lineup.
Â
Tillmanns, a junior, is the team leader in stroke average at an impressive 70.69 through the three stroke-play tournaments. He's recorded three top-20 finishes this fall, including a tie for sixth at the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate and a tie for ninth at the Wildcat Invitational.Â
Â
The lone senior for the Wildcats, Hopkins, is fourth on the team in stroke average at 71.89 and claimed a top-20 finish at the Old Town Collegiate. Hopkins will try to find his first top-five finish in his senior season after capturing a tied-for-team best two top-five finishes a year ago for K-State.
Â
Luke O'Neill, a sophomore who finished 4th at the Wildcat invitational and is second on the team in stroke average at 71.67, has been a pleasant surprise for the Wildcats and he will look to continue his solid play this weekend.
Â
The two exciting freshmen for K-State, Schutlz and Mason, will look to continue their upward trajectory in the fall finale. This season, the duo has combined for a pair of top-20 finishes and each have earned three starts in the lineup this fall.Â
Â
Another young Wildcat who has had a strong season, Ethan Miller, will compete as an individual at the Steelwood Collegiate. The sophomore has been a consistent contributor all season for the Cats with his best finish coming at the Wildcat Invitational in a tie for ninth place.
Â
After already navigating through a difficult fall slate, K-State is no stranger to strong competition, and this weekend in Loxley will be no different.
Â
The 14-team field includes Cincinnati, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Alabama, Rice, Rutgers, South Alabama, UAB and Wisconsin.
Â
"We just have to go out there be confident, hopefully make a few putts and finish the fall off strong," Robbins said.
Â
Kansas State will tee off at 8:30 a.m., Saturday morning with a shotgun start to begin rounds one and two. The Steelwood Collegiate will conclude on Sunday with the final round set to begin at 7:40 a.m. with a double-tees start.
