Cyclones Overpower Wildcats in Four Sets Thursday

Nov 11, 2021 | Volleyball

AMES, Iowa – K-State was limited to 44 kills and a .139 hitting percentage by Iowa State Thursday night, as the Cyclones laid claim to a four-set victory at Hilton Coliseum, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17.

The Wildcats' kill total marked a season low in a four-set match, while their hitting efficiency was the second lowest four-set clip of the year. Conversely, Iowa State's 60 kills were a season high allowed by the Cats in a four-set contest.

"Credit to Iowa State, they made things extremely difficult for us tonight," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "They defended long, dug it like crazy and made us work for every point. It was difficult to really create any momentum offensively. We got things going a bit near the end of game two and into game three, but (Iowa State) made some nice adjustments. They're near the top of the Big 12 for a reason."

Aliyah Carter was the only Wildcat to reach double-digit kills, leading the team with 11. Haley Warner was next with nine and Kadye Fernholz finished with seven. Sydney Bolding pitched in six and led K-State (14-8, 5-6 Big 12) with her .278 hitting efficiency.

Iowa State (16-8, 8-5 Big 12) had three players eclipse the 10-kill mark, led by 17 from Eleanor Holthaus. Avery Rhodes added a dozen and Annie Hatch had 11.

The Wildcats hit above .200 just once in the night's four sets, hitting .235 in the third. The Cyclones finished with the edge in kills in all four sets and won the hitting efficiency battle in three frames.

ISU totaled 62 digs in suppressing the K-State offense, as Brooke Stonestreet led all players with 18 and Marija Popovic added 15. The Cats managed 45 digs, paced by Mackenzie Morris' 14.

With the match tied at a set apiece, K-State raced out to a 9-3 lead in the third, including three kills from Carter, before the Cyclones responded with four consecutive points. ISU's run climbed to an 8-2 stretch to even the score at 11. From there, Iowa State led by as many as five while getting five kills from Hatch in the third.

Popovic served back-to-back aces, as she accounted for two of her team's three in the set. ISU finished with five aces on the night while K-State managed two.

The Cats hit .235 to the Cyclones' .190, but Iowa State won the kill battle, 16-12. Carter added four kills to her ledger in the third set while Warner contributed three.

Despite a 15-12 deficit in kills in the second set, K-State withstood 15 tie scores and eight lead changes to even the match. Three unanswered points late in the frame handed the Wildcats a 21-20 edge before they finished by scoring three of the final four points.

Carter added three kills in the second while Warner added two. The K-State offense hit just .171 but the Cats were able to limit the Cyclones to a .179 clip. Bolding added a pair of kills and had a .571 efficiency through two sets.

K-State hit just .156 in the opening set compared to a .312 efficiency from the Cyclones. The Cats were forced into eight errors, as ISU recorded three blocks with Candelaria Herrera being a part of all three. A three-point scoring run was the longest that K-State could manage while only registering a pair of two-point spurts.

Teana Adams-Kaonohi, Fernholz and Warner tallied three kills apiece to lead the Wildcat offense. Bolding picked up two kills on two swings.

Despite a 15-12 deficit in kills in the second set, K-State withstood 15 tie scores and eight lead changes to even the match. Three unanswered points late in the frame handed the Wildcats a 21-20 edge before they finished by scoring three of the final four points.
