Shankar Sets New Meet Record During 2021-22 Season Opener
Dec 10, 2021 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team had a successful day on Friday (December 10) at the Ahearn Field House during the Carol Robinson Women's and Attila Zsivoczky Men's Winter Pentathlon.
Highlighting the event was senior Tejaswin Shankar setting the meet record in the high jump with a height of 2.25m/7-4.50m. Freshman Carl AF Forselles jumped to a height of 1.86m/6-1.25.
"We don't really train for this meet," stated Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "What I tend to do is I'll write down what I think people are ready to do at that time based on what they have done at practice. High jump for TJ (Tejaswin) was very good and he jumped to a mark that is still a world best in the pentathlon and it is December."
Leading the way in the 60-meter hurdles for the women's pentathlon was junior Vitoria Sena Batista Alves with a time of 8.60, placing first overall. In her first indoor meet, freshman Madelyn McCabe placed fourth with a time of 9.18. Competing unattached and finishing in sixth was junior Urte Bacianskaite, recording a personal-best time of 9.40. Concluding the 60-meter hurdles in eighth place was junior Madeline Righter with a time of 9.68.
In the 60-meter hurdles for the men's pentathlon, Shankar clocked in at 8.23, while Forselles was close behind a time of 8.67.

Rounding out the women's pentathlon was the 800-meter run. Coming in fifth place was McCabe with a time of 2:34.77, while Bacianskaite was in sixth with a time of 2:39.95. Righter placed eighth for K-State, recording a time of 3:09.71.
Shankar concluded the men's pentathlon with 4,321 points.
McCabe finished in third place overall with 3,706 points. Bacianskaite was in fourth with 3,594 and Righter came in eighth with 2,469.
"It was a pretty solid performance for this time in the year," said Rovelto. "Urte has made, in training, a lot of progress in almost every event. She is running better, jumping better, and throwing better. I think she is pretty solid for where she is in training and what she has done in the past. She competed much better today than she ever has around this time of year."
Up next for the Wildcats is the K-State Winter Invitational on Saturday (December 11). Competition will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. CT with the Loren Groves women's weight throw. Track events will start at 12 p.m. CT with the women's mile. Field events will run 30 minutes after the conclusion of the event prior.
