Wildcats Take Control of Field Events at Texas Tech Shootout
Feb 12, 2021 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field teams enjoyed an impressive effort during the field events at the Texas Tech Shootout at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Texas, while the distance teams performed equally as well at the Iowa State Classic at the Lied Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa on Friday evening (February 12).
"I thought the weight was solid," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "A couple of them are on the verge of significant PR's. We had a couple of PR's with the freshman."
The Wildcats got things started in the weight throw events on day one with seniors Shaelyn Ward and Colin Echols each placing third overall. Ward delivered a throw of 201.4m/66-1.00 to grab bronze on the women's side, while Echols launched a mark of 19.26m/63-2.25 to earn the third spot on the men's leaderboard.
A few other Wildcats notched personal bests in the weight throw divisions, with freshmen Kade McCall (18.75m/61-6.25) and Jasmine Greer (17.94m/58-10.25) both shattering their previous marks in the event. The two throwers each finished sixth overall in the men's and women's leaderboards.
K-State performed well in the long jump with six Wildcats combining for spots in the Top 10 of the men's and women's events. Senior Tejaswin Shankar compiled a third-overall finish with a mark of 7.38m/24-2.50 in the men's group, while junior Chantoba Bright led five women in the Top 10 with a fourth-place jump of 6.19 m/20-3.75. The leap placed Bright with the No. 8 all-time mark in school history.
Other top finishers in the women's long jump included senior Taishia Pryce (5th, 6.17m/20-3.00), freshman Rhianna Phipps (6th, 6.14m/20-1.75), senior Wurrie Njadoe (9th, 5.95m/19-6.25) and junior Vitoria Alves (10th, 5.94m/19-6.00).
"The long jump was a mixed bag," said Rovelto. "Some PR's and some a little off. Same with the 400's"
Fast forwarding to the 60-meter hurdles race, Alves shot out of a cannon to finish second overall at a time of 8.18 seconds, which is a new personal-best. Her time of 8.18 seconds remains second all-time in school history for the event.
"Vitoria (Alves) is getting consistent in the hurdles at a much-improved level," Rovelto stated. "Hopefully soon, she will have another breakthrough."
Sophomore Shalysa Wray notched a top-10 outing in the 400-meter race with a time of 55.03 to finish in ninth place.
Up in Ames, Iowa, K-State sent a group of distance runners to compete inside the Lied Recreation Center at the Iowa State Classic, where the team saw junior Cooper Schroeder place third in the men's 5000 meters at a pace of 13:57.66. In the women's 5000 meters, sophomore Jaybe Shufelberger earned a 12th-place performance with a time of 17:01.09.
"The 5k at ISU was very solid," said Rovelto. "Cooper (Schroeder) ran great."
The Wildcats will wrap up the Texas Tech Shootout and Iowa State Classic on Saturday, February 13. The Shootout will begin at 11 a.m., CT, while the ISU Classic competition kicks off at 12 p.m., CT with track events.
