Mar 10, 2021 | Cross Country

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Championship aspirations are on the line for sophomore Jaybe Shufelberger, who will compete in next week's NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday, March 15 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The national championship will be held on Oklahoma State's historic OSU Cross Country Course.

Monday's 6k race will begin at 11:50 a.m., CT, to kick off the championship meet.

"Jaybe had a very good cross country season this past fall," said head coach Ryun Godfrey on Shufelberger's at-large bid. "I'm excited that she has qualified for the NCAA Championships that will be held next week. It will be a great opportunity for her."

Competing with the K-State track and field teams since early December, Shufelberger will now return to the cross country course to take on the best athletes in the nation. She will have her hands full this weekend, as she joins a packed field of athletes who arrive from top-30 programs dispersed across a handful of conferences.

"I am beyond excited and so grateful to get the chance to compete at the national stage," said Shufelberger. "This is such an amazing opportunity and getting this experience will fuel my drive to get more opportunities like this one."

Three Big 12 foes will make the trip to Stillwater on Monday, featuring Big 12 champion Iowa State, along with West Virginia and host Oklahoma State. Multiple teams from the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll will look to make their mark at the national meet, including reigning champion Arkansas, which holds the top ranking in the nation coming into the meet followed by No. 2 BYU.

Since 2019, Shufelberger has filled the K-State record books while placing herself with some of the best who have ever donned the purple and white. She became the 15th Wildcat in program history to earn all-conference honors during her freshman season, only to capture another All-Big 12 Cross Country accolade in 2020, giving her the unique distinction with nine others to score back-to-back conference accolades in K-State Cross Country history.

It has been 12 years since K-State has earned an All-American distinction at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Former K-State runner Beverly Ramos collected the last All-American nod during the 2009 race, where she placed 33rd overall at a pace of 20:38.9.

The 2014 NCAA Championship featured K-State's last performer who punched a ticket to the national meet with former Wildcat Laura Galvan finishing the 6k meet with a time of 21:25.20, good for 128th overall.

In total, the Wildcats have tallied eight All-Americans in the women's race since 1970.

Results will be made available on www.kstatesports.com and K-State Track & Field and Cross Country social media accounts following the conclusion of Monday's race. Fans and viewers who want to keep up with live updates for the 6k race can use the live results link provided by Prime Time Timing. Both races will air on ESPNU.

Shufelberger's Trophy Case
  • 2020 NCAA Championship Individual Qualifier
  • 2019 and 2020 All-Big 12 Cross Country honors
  • 2020 Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country selection
  • Owns the 14th-fastest time in school history for the 6k race (21:04.9)
  • Her ninth-place performance at the 2020 Big 12 Cross Country Championship was the best finish for a Wildcat since Laura Galvan crossed the line in sixth place during the 2013 meet.
