No. 43 K-State Falls to No. 33 Texas Tech in Big 12 Opener, 7-0

Mar 12, 2021 | Tennis

LUBBOCK, Texas – Taking on a highly-touted Texas Tech squad, the Kansas State women's tennis team found themselves in an early hole and could not claw their way back, resulting in a 7-0 defeat on Friday (March 12) afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Ā
"I clearly didn't prepare this team well enough to compete today," said head coach Jordan Smith. "During our two-week break, we forgot what it's like to believe in ourselves in a match. I hope our ladies use today as a reminder to charge forward and not expect things to be handed to us."
Ā
The Red Raiders (8-3) controlled the courts for the duration of Friday's match and captured the winning point early in singles play. A slow start in doubles play lingered over after intermission for K-State (4-3), who could not keep up with Texas Tech in its first Big 12 match in nearly two years.
Ā
Courts one and two in doubles' competition fell at the hands of Texas Tech, which included a 6-0 set loss from the Wildcats' No. 46-ranked duo of sophomore Karine-Marion Job and junior Maria Linares and a 6-1 setback in the No. 2 spot from senior Margot Decker and Ioana Gheorghita.
Ā
At the top of the lineup for singles play, Job quickly regained some momentum for K-State in her battle with Texas Tech's Lisa Mays, delivering a 6-3 victory in set one. However, her early lead would not last, as Job dropped her match in a crucial third-set tiebreaker at 0-1 (10-5).
Ā
Texas Tech swept K-State in the other five singles' match to put the final stamp on the victory. Decker, senior Lilla Barzo, freshman Manami Ukita and sophomore Rosanna Maffei were each ousted in their matchups in straight sets. Maffei's showdown in the No. 2 position featured an ITA-ranked opponent in Kaitlin Staines, who polished up her No. 100 ranking on Friday afternoon with 6-1, 6-2 win in straight sets.
Ā
Junior Anna Turco had to retire in the first stage of her match in the No. 6 spot, which ended her time on the court with a loss by default.
Ā
The loss snaps K-State's four-match win streak, which began at the home opener against Drake on February 12.
Ā
Conference play will continue for K-State in the Lone Star State on Sunday against TCU at 1 p.m., CT.
Ā
"We'll definitely be better against TCU on Sunday than we were today," Smith said.
