Wildcats Sweep Saint Louis Sunday
Mar 14, 2021 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman Aliyah Carter carded her first career double-double and freshman Jayden Nembhard put down a dozen kills in K-State's straight-set victory over Saint Louis Sunday at Bramlage Coliseum, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22.
Carter, playing six rotations for the second straight match, turned in a match-best 13 kills to go with a career-high 10 digs, helping K-State (11-7, 10-6 Big 12) snap a three-match skid dating back to the fall season.
Nembhard produced her fifth double-digit kill performance of the season, as the Wildcats owned a 45-32 edge in total kills over Saint Louis (7-7, 6-1 Atlantic 10). As a team, the Cats hit at a .275 clip while limiting SLU to a .118 efficiency.
"I didn't think we were particularly clean in that one," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "The staff and team thought there were a lot of ebbs and flows in the match that didn't allow us to consistently put the point scoring runs together. In the end, it's high efficiency, we were hitting around .300 and them at about 11. The differential there feels pretty good."
In her first start of the season, middle blocker Kayley Hollywood led K-State with her .364 hitting percentage, logging five kills on 11 attempts with one error. Hollywood's kill total and hitting efficiency marked career highs.
"Kayley Hollywood, I think that's one of her first starts of the season as the M2, she came in and, offensively, did some nice things for us," Fritz added. "Shelby (Martin), as well, came in and gave us a little bit of an upgrade in set two. We had our outsides, Jayden (Nembhard) and Aliyah (Carter), hitting in a lot of out-of-system stuff and having to kind of take the trash out a little bit and hit a lot of high balls. I thought for the most part, they did a nice job for us on the left."
Martin, who entered the match at setter late in the first set, dished out 28 assists to go with seven digs. The Cats hit .351 in the second set and .293 in the final frame after posting an offensive efficiency of .161 in the opening game.
Holly Bonde chipped in seven kills, hitting .263, and Kadye Fernholz added five while leading the team in blocks with four.
Freshman libero Mackenzie Morris led K-State in digs for the 18th straight match, turning in 11.
In the opening set, Saint Louis held a 12-10 advantage in kills but committed 10 attacking errors along with three service errors. The Wildcats limited SLU to a .050 hitting efficiency while the K-State offense hit .133.
Bonde and Fernholz each registered three kills to lead the Wildcats. Bonde's three kills came on just four swings without an error. The Billikens scored back-to-back points to pull within two at 19-17, before the Wildcats closed on a 6-2 run to take the first set. Fernholz and Hollywood accounted for the set-sealing kills.
After not registering a kill in the first set, Carter put down seven in the second frame. Nembhard added six kills as the duo accounted for 13 of the Wildcats' 17 in the second set while the team hit at a .351 pace.
SLU committed six more attacking errors in picking up eight kills for a team efficiency of .074 in the second. K-State raced out to a 7-2 lead and used a six-point burst to open up an 18-10 advantage. SLU fought off three set points before Nembhard closed the set with her seventh kill of the day.
The final set saw 16 tie scores and seven lead changes before the Cats tallied three straight kills, one from Fernholz and two by Carter, to pick up their first sweep since November 13 against TCU.
K-State scored eight of the day's 11 eight points after trailing by a pair, 19-17. The Billikens hit a match-high .186 in the third set after not hitting above .075 in the match's first two stanzas.
Carter logged six more kills while Nembhard accounted for five in the set. Three of K-State's six blocks occurred in the third game.
Maya Taylor paced the SLU offense with 11 kills, needing 43 swings while committing eight errors (.070).
K-State will continue its spring slate on Saturday, March 20, as the Cats will host No. 23 Creighton at 6 p.m. at Bramlage Coliseum. K-State will honor seniors Abigail Archibong and Megan Vernon following its matchup with the Bluejays.
