K-State Flourishes in Final Outing at UTSA Invitational

Mar 20, 2021 | Track & Field

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Kansas State track and field teams flourished in the final outing of the UTSA Invitational on Saturday (March 20) afternoon, recording six individual wins at the Park West Athletics Complex.

"I feel like we had good efforts from virtually everyone this weekend," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "A number of PR's and very good marks by newcomers, as well as folks who have not competed in a while."

The final day of competition began with a dominating performance in the women's discus from senior Ashley Petr, as she made her 2020-21 season debut and delivered a win in the field for K-State with mark of 55.20m/181-01.

Just a few feet away from Petr was junior Vitoria Alves, who earned a runner-up finish in the long jump competition with a mark of 6.01m/19-08.75 in the sand.

In the men's discus event, senior Cameron Lewis notched his second win of the weekend with a heave of 51.47m/168-10 after putting up a quality outing in men's shot put on Friday afternoon.

"The throwers had a very strong weekend," Rovelto stated. "The long throws I thought were particularly impressive for a first meet."

K-State got back to work in the men's high jump on Saturday afternoon, with senior Kyle Alcine using a mark of 2.11m/6-11 to punch his name at the top of the leaderboard. Sophomore Devon Richardson finished in third place by registering a height of 2.06m/6-09.

Reaching high above the field was sophomore Chandler Heid, as he leaped 4.65m/15-3.00 to spot up at fourth overall in the pole vault leaderboard.

Track wise, multiple relay teams were present for K-State on Saturday afternoon, including a dominant showing from the men's 4x100 relay group.

With the help of freshman Darian Clarke and the senior trio of Jah Strange, Justin Davis and Jullane Walker, the four sprinters produced a time of 40.30 seconds to secure another win for the Wildcats.

Shortly after the men's victory in the relay, Alves and senior teammate Kimisha Chambers locked up top-10 outings in school history for the 100-meter hurdles, as Alves scorched down the track in 13.14 seconds to take the No. 3 all-time mark in school history, while Chambers crossed the line at 13.38, placing her at the No. 4 ranking in school history for the outdoor season.

"With last week being indoor nationals, we just kept doing the same work that we had been before," said Alves. "I was surprised and super happy with the result today!"

Junior distance guru Alex Ferguson brought the heat in the women's 400 meters, resulting in a bronze-medal finish at a pace of 56.79 seconds.

Slated in the 200 meters, the duo of senior Wurrie Njadoe (2nd, 23.86) and junior Chantoba Bright (3rd, 24.40) each tacked on top-three finishes in the event.

Finding his rhythm in the men's 200 meters, senior Jullane Walker exploded out the gates and placed first overall with a time of 21.09 seconds.

Securing the win in the men's 1500 meters was senior Noah Stevenson, who posted a time of 3:50.89, boosting him to first-place honors and new personal best in the race.

"From a team perspective, this was definitely the best first meet we have ever had," Rovelto said. "Outstanding team effort for anytime of the season."

Looking ahead, K-State will return to the Sunflower State and head down to Wichita, Kansas on March 27 to participate in the Shocker Invitational at Cessna Stadium.
