Wildcats Take Ninth at MountainView Collegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. – With high scores the theme for most teams on a windy Sunday, the Kansas State women's golf team carded a final round of 16-over par 304 to finish the MountainView Collegiate in ninth place at 29-over par 893 at the par-72, 6,350-yard Preserve Golf Club.

"The course played tough today, and we had so many birdie putts that we thought were going in that didn't fall. That happens sometimes in golf," head coach Kristi Knight said. "It's frustrating. We were all around the hole. At the end of the day, I'm proud of the ladies. It wasn't our best ball striking the past couple days, but they battled hard today. We saw a lot of good up and downs and par saves, and we will bounce back."

Seniors Reid Isaac and Niamh McSherry led the Wildcats on Sunday with scores of 1-over par 73 and 2-over par 74, respectively. Isaac was able to move three spots up the individual leaderboard to finish in a tie for 16th at 1-over par 217. McSherry tied for 39th at 8-over par 224.

"Reid and Niamh just battled all day," Knight said. "You talk about grinding out a golf score. They had to work hard. You just have to stay in the game mentally, and there is no time to feel sorry for yourself. I think that's what Reid and Niamh showed this weekend. You just have to take the good with the bad, and you have to get your mind set on the shot at hand. I think they set a really good example for the younger ones on the team."

Napua Glossner finished third among the Wildcats at 9-over par 225 to tie for 42nd. Haley Vargas tied for 49th at 13-over par 229, and Heather Fortushniak marked a final score 17-over par 233 to tie for 57th.

With a final-round best of 10-under par 278, Oklahoma State was able to climb two spots on the leaderboard and squeeze by Texas to take the tournament title at 20-over par 844, two strokes ahead of the Longhorns. The Cowgirls also took the crown in the individual standings after Maja Stark posted three-consecutive rounds in the 60s to finish at 11-under par 205.

K-State is back in action next Sunday and Monday as the Wildcats compete in The Bruzzy held at Lantana Golf Club in Argyle, Texas.
