K-State Heads North for Creighton Duel

Mar 26, 2021 | Rowing

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a successful scrimmage in Oklahoma City, the Kansas State women's rowing team is set for its first official regatta of the spring campaign. The Wildcats will travel to Omaha, Nebraska for the Creighton Duel on Saturday, March 27.

"It's nice to get back to racing," said head coach Pat Sweeney. "That's why we're here. It is what we want to do, it's what the kids want to do, and we are happy we will be able to get them back to the starting line. Coming off the scrimmage in Oklahoma, we made some changes. This is a chance to go for it and review. Every competition sets us up for later in the season."

The Creighton Duel will be the first official race for the Wildcats in more than a year and the first since the Sac State Duel in Sacramento, California on March 8, 2020.

"It's great to get back to competing," said Sweeney. "We've worked hard, and the team has kept on it. Now we get to see what they have, and they get to go for it, all out, when they race."

The regatta in Omaha will be K-State's first matchup with the Bluejays since 2005. In the previous head-to-head battle, the Wildcats picked up three victories on the water in Manhattan, all coming from the 1v8+, 2v8+ and 2N8+ boats.

K-State looks to build off the momentum from previous seasons this Saturday. In their last official race, the Wildcats had a solid performance at the Sac State Dual in March of 2020. The event on Lake Natoma featured two stellar wins from the 3v8+ and 1v4+ boats and included two more runner-up finishes in the 2v8+ and 1v8+ races.

Those four medals highlighted the 2020 slate for K-State before the rest of the spring schedule was erased due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following Saturday's race slate, the Wildcats will venture south to Sarasota, Florida to compete in the Sunshine State Invitational on April 2-3.

Stay tuned for live updates on Twitter throughout the day. A full recap of the event in Omaha will be made available on kstatesports.com following the scrimmage.

"We do it for the fun of racing," said Sweeney. "Part of the competition, part of the fun, is not knowing what race day will bring. We focus on our team and what we are capable of. Everyone has been away from racing for over a year and now we get to see what everyone will bring back."
