Late Surge by No. 33 Iowa State Dooms K-State, 4-2

Mar 26, 2021 | Tennis

AMES, Iowa – After taking the early lead in doubles play, the Kansas State women's tennis team could not sustain its momentum in singles' competition, falling to No. 33 Iowa State, 4-2, on Friday (March 26) afternoon at Forker Tennis Courts.

"We had a great start in doubles," said head coach Jordan Smith. "One of our better doubles performances this season. Almost had a complete team effort in singles. Unfortunately, that will not will not win us many matches in this league or anywhere."

Collecting impressive wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions in doubles' action, K-State (5-6, 0-3 Big 12) saw its advantage falter in singles' play, as the Cyclones (11-4, 3-2 Big 12) won four of five matchups to extend their home court winning streak to 16 matches.

The pairing of Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares continued to surge at the No. 1 spot since Monday's victory against DePaul, as the duo knocked off the Cyclones' Thasaporn Naklo and Miska Kadleckova, 6-2. Both Naklo and Kadleckova rank No. 73 in the country for doubles' play.

"Maria (Linares) and KJ (Karine-Marion Job) picked up a great ranked win," said Smith.

K-State's early lead would come from court three, with sophomores Ioana Gheorghita and Rosanna Maffei picking up their first win in doubles' competition together against ISU's Maty Cancini and Sofia Cabezas, 6-3.

"Ioana (Gheorghita) and Rosy (Rosanna Maffei) did awesome pulling their match out," Smith said. "Complete team effort by all eight players in doubles."

However, Iowa State seized control of the match with a flurry of points in the latter part of Friday's competition with a strong showing in singles' play.

Competing on courts four and five, senior Margot Decker and freshman Manami Ukita fought hard to push their matches to third sets but came up short, as Decker was defeated by Iowa State's Christen Hsieh (1-6, 0-6) while Ukita faltered in her showdown with the Cyclones' Chie Kezuka (4-6, 2-6).

Iowa State then extended its lead to 3-1 at the No. 2 spot, as Linares slipped in her comeback attempt against the Cyclones' Maty Cancini, 1-6, 5-7.

Job had a hand in keeping Friday's match alive with an impressive three-set win over the Cyclones' Thasaporn Naklo, 6-0, 1-6, 6-4, giving K-State its second point of the afternoon. The victory pushes Job to 4-4 on the year at the top spot in the lineup.

"KJ (Karine-Marion Job) had a day," said Smith. "Picked up probably her best singles win ever and I'm proud of her."

In dual-match play, the Wildcats have now recorded 25 wins in singles' competition for the spring campaign with Job's victory at the No. 1 position.

The match was then decided on court three, as Maffei could not overcome an early deficit to Iowa State's Miska Kadleckova, falling in two sets, 4-6, 6-7 (7).

K-State will look to bounce back on Sunday, March 28 as it continues its conference road trip in Morgantown, W.Va., to face off with West Virginia (3-5, 0-5 Big 12) at 9 a.m., CT.
