WICHITA, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field teams put together quality performances and shined on the first day of the Shocker Invitational on Friday (March 26) evening at Cessna Stadium.
K-State's outing in the field began with an impressive finish from senior All-American Helene Ingvaldsen, who found herself in second place in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 66.22m/217-3. The mark boosted her up to third all-time in school history in the event.
"Helene (Ingvaldsen) had a PR, so obviously that was great," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto.
Freshman Kade McCall continued the Wildcats' success in the hammer throw competition, launching a mark of 60.43m/198-3 to earn another runner-up finish.
"Kade (McCall) was over 60 meters again, so his freshman year is off to a fine start," said Rovelto.
In the distance races, junior Cara Melgares recorded a new personal record in the 5,000 meters with a pace of 17:31.58, which helped the Manhattan, Kansas, native cross the line in first place.
"Cara (Melgares) looked like her old self, so that was good to see," Rovelto stated.
Dialing back the meters on the track, the Wildcats scored top-10 outings in the 1,500-meter races on Friday evening. Junior Kassidy Johnson (3rd, 4:29.51) and sophomore Mike Rohlinger (6th, 3:54.99) navigated around Cessna Stadium to earn standout finishes in each race.
The men's 5,000 meters completed its run with four Wildcats in the top-5, as sophomores David Lutgen (2nd, 14:30.75), Kerby Depenbusch (3rd, 14:32.58), Hadley Splechter (4th, 14:34.41) and senior Noah Stevenson (5th, 14:52.32) contributed to K-State's dominance on the track.
The Wildcats remain in Wichita for one more day as the second leg of the Shocker Invitational will begin tomorrow at 11 a.m., CT with field events.
