No. 13 Cowboys Grind Out 4-2 Win Over Cats

Mar 27, 2021 | Baseball

STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 13 Oklahoma State scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday night, as the Cowboys claimed a 4-2 win over K-State to clinch the series at O'Brate Stadium.

OSU's Cade Cabbiness delivered a two-out RBI double that scored Jaxson Crull from first base. Crull, who pinch ran for Brock Mathis after he walked, slid headfirst at home and just beat out the tag of Wildcat catcher Dylan Caplinger.

Cabbiness' double was his second of the game and was OSU's only run-scoring hit in the ballgame, sending K-State (13-9, 0-2 Big 12) to its third straight loss. Oklahoma State (14-6-1, 3-2 Big 12) held the Wildcats hitless with runners in scoring position (0-for-7).

Wildcat starter Carson Seymour turned in his second quality start in his last three outings, as he struck out seven while scattering four hits in his six innings of work. The redshirt sophomore right-hander yielded two runs in the first inning and gave up just two hits over his final four frames.

"We wasted a great start by Carson (Seymour)," said head coach Pete Hughes. "We've got to find a way to win tight games, there's really no margin for error in these types of games. We bobbled a tag at home, then we get a ground-rule double that would've scored a run [if it stayed in the park]. But when you play tight games, it's always the little things that show up."

Cameron Uselton began the fifth with a single, and after Cameron Thompson was hit by a pitch and Dom Hughes reached on an error, K-State had the bases loaded and nobody out. A wild pitch and a passed ball allowed Uselton and Thompson to score, respectively, and level the score at the midway point of the game.

After the fifth, the Cats' offense was retired in order in each of the next four innings. From the sixth inning on, OSU starter Justin Campbell and relievers Colton Bowman and Brett Standlee combined for seven strikeouts.

"We've got to be better and be more competitive offensively," Hughes added. "And we've got to clean up our defense because when you're in the Big 12, errors are going bite you and walks are going to get you, too. We've just got to play cleaner baseball because we are getting good enough starting pitching to win in this league. Until we clean up our fundamentals, it's not going to happen."

Oklahoma State manufactured a pair of runs in the first inning, getting a sacrifice fly from Christian Encarnacion-Strand and an RBI groundout from Max Hewitt. Seymour allowed one hit and hit two batters in the opening inning.

Chris Ceballos and Nick Goodwin each doubled in the game for K-State. Hughes and Uselton both singled to account for the Wildcats' four base hits.

Caleb Littlejim took the loss after allowing two earned on two hits with two walks in an inning and two-thirds.

Campbell went seven innings in his start, striking out 11 and walking two. Campbell allowed two unearned runs on four hits. Standlee picked up the win after striking out three of the four hitters he saw in finishing the contest.

Seymour, Littlejim and Eric Torres combined to hold Oklahoma State without a hit with runners in scoring position (0-for-9).

Cabbiness, Encarnacion-Strand and Caiden Trenkle each had two hits for the Cowboys.

K-State and Oklahoma State finish the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. from O'Brate Stadium. The game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Radio coverage is available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with live, free audio at K-StateSports.com/watch.
