Women’s Rowing Ventures South for Sunshine State Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team will compete against some of the top programs in the country this weekend, as they travel to Sarasota, Florida to participate in the Sunshine State Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park.
"This weekend is going to be a good experience for the team," said head coach Pat Sweeney. "This is likely the only multi-lane race we will compete in until Big 12's. The feel of this competition will help set us up for Big 12's and competing against multiple strong crews at once.
"We are looking forward to the competition. There is still the possibility of some crews being faster, some being slower, and a lot of the racing being tight. We are locked into what we can control and staying focused on ourselves."
The Sunshine State Invitational brings a stacked field of rowing programs from around the country. Friday and Saturday's race schedule will include six opponents, including host UCF, Clemson, Jacksonville, Stetson, Kansas, and Miami.
K-State is looking to build off last week's efforts at the Creighton Duel, where every race was won in a dominating fashion. The clean sweep has set the tone for the technique and focus the team hopes to bring to each competition.
"The team is in good shape," said Sweeney. "We haven't been able to get on the water as much as we would like, but our athletes have continued doing what they can to prepare. We had a strong showing at Creighton, especially on the technical side. Our aim is to stay locked into that same technique, continue finding ways to be more effective, and keep moving forward from last week."
The Wildcats had an impressive performance in their last appearance at the Sunshine State Invitational, capturing three silver medals and one bronze medal in the grand finals of the 2019 event from the 2v4+, 1v4+, 3v8+ and 2v8+ boats.
The evening heats were equally impressive for K-State, which included first-place finishes in the 2v8+ and 1v4+ races during the first session of the 2019 regatta.
K-State will have one more regatta this month as the Wildcats travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Tulsa Triangular on April 10. The regatta will include host Tulsa and Central Oklahoma.
"It is still early in the season, and that makes it difficult to gauge where each school is," said Sweeney. "We are all coming from a year off and race days always has a certain level of uncertainty to it. It is going to be competitive."
Stay tuned for live updates on Twitter throughout the day. A full recap of the event in Sarasota will be made available on kstatesports.com following the scrimmage.
