No. 3 Longhorns Clinch Series Saturday
Apr 10, 2021 | Baseball
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Texas scored 13 runs in the game's first four inning on its way to defeating K-State, 15-1, Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns (24-8, 9-2 Big 12) tallied seven runs in the third and added five more in the fourth, as UT registered 13 hits in clinching the series victory.
K-State (17-13, 2-6 Big 12) got a home run from Nick Goodwin in the sixth inning for its lone run of the game. Dylan Phillips produced the Wildcats' only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.
"We didn't throw enough strikes and we gave Texas too many free base runners," head coach Pete Hughes said. "That's a difficult challenge against a good offense in their park. Damage control is the key to winning in conference and we were not very efficient in that area today."
Texas brought 12 to the plate in its seven-run third inning. UT recorded six hits, including a two-run single by Douglas Hodo and an RBI double from Dylan Campbell. Wildcat starter Carson Seymour walked three in the inning, as his day ended with one out gone in the frame.
Seymour's outing was the shortest of his K-State career, lasting just 2 1/3 innings. In the loss, Seymour allowed a career-high seven earned runs on four hits to go with four walks and three stirkeouts.
Five more runs were added to the Longhorns' lead in the fourth, highlighted by Ivan Melendez's two-run home run and a two-RBI triple from Murphy Stehly. The homer was Melendez's second of the series.
Griffin Hassall, who began the fourth, walked two in the inning. Hassall logged three innings in relief and struck out one with four walks. The sophomore allowed five earned runs on three hits.
In total, four K-State pitchers combined to walk nine and strike out seven.
Goodwin's solo home run, his sixth of the year, got the Cats on the board in the sixth.
Daniel Carinci and Zach Kokoska each doubled in the game, as Kokoska extended his on-base streak to 26 games.
UT starter Tristan Stevens worked seven innings, scattering eight hits and yielding one run without a walk and two strikeouts in the win.
Zach Zubia drew four walks for the Longhorns and Melendez registered four RBI. Hodo went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Mike Antico hit a leadoff home run in the first.
Texas hit .600 (9-for-15) with runners in scoring position and .529 with runners on base (10-for-19).
The Cats and Longhorns wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network and the ESPN app. Radio coverage will be available on the News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and live, free audio at K-StateSports.com/watch.
