K-State Drops Series Finale at No. 3 Texas
Apr 11, 2021 | Baseball
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Texas lifted three two-run home runs Sunday afternoon, including two from Ivan Melendez, to defeat K-State 9-2 in the series finale at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
In addition to Melendez's two home runs, the Longhorns (25-8, 10-2 Big 12) got a two-run shot from Mike Antico in claiming their eighth straight win. UT scored multiple runs in four of eight frames.
Zach Kokoska connected on his team-leading 12th homer of the season, a solo bomb that cut Texas' lead to 2-1 in the fourth. K-State (17-14, 2-7 Big 12) got multi-hit efforts from Kokoska and Daniel Carinci.
"I thought Connor (McCullough) pitched well today with the exception of a couple mistakes," head coach Pete Hughes said. "He pitched well enough for us to win today, but we were unable to provide him with any run support. Unfortunately, we were inefficient with runners on base all day long, and Texas was not."
K-State starter Connor McCullough did not allow a hit until the third inning when Trey Faltine reached on an infield single. Antico followed with his two-run blast, his second home run of the series.
Melendez's first home run came in the fourth, pushing UT's lead to 4-1 after Kokoska trimmed the Cats' deficit to a run. Melendez added a second home run in the sixth, his fourth of the weekend, to put the score at 6-2 through six frames.
The Longhorns added three late runs off K-State reliever Kasey Ford in the eighth. Douglas Hodo and Eric Kennedy each added RBI singles in the inning.
Ford pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief of McCullough. Ford, a senior, struck out four with three runs allowed on five hits.
McCullough's record moved to 2-2 after the redshirt freshman allowed six runs on five hits with four strikeouts. McCullough equaled his career high with four walks.
Kolby Kubichek earned the win after a career-high seven innings, striking out five with one walk. He scattered seven hits with one earned run allowed.
Nick Goodwin provided a first-inning double. Goodwin's hit and Kokoska's home run were the only extra-base hits for K-State on the afternoon.
Kokoska extended his career-long on-base streak to 27 games.
Faltine, Kennedy and Melendez each registered multi-hit games for Texas. Melendez finished the day with four RBI.
The Cats went 2-for-14 with runners on base and 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Texas hit .417 (-for-12) with two outs and .538 (7-for-13) with runners on base.
The Wildcats begin a 12-game homestand starting Tuesday with two-game series against Northern Colorado. The series will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Radio coverage will be available on the News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and live, free audio at K-StateSports.com/watch.
