K-State Bows Out to No. 40 Oklahoma State, 4-0

Apr 16, 2021 | Tennis

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's tennis team dropped its conference matchup against No. 40 Oklahoma State, 4-0, on Friday afternoon (April 16) at Body First Tennis Center.
Ā
"We didn't capitalize on early chances in doubles," said head coach Jordan Smith. "Right now, we're not a complete team. Too many individuals at the moment."
Ā
Competing inside for the first time since February 22 due to weather, K-State's (7-10, 2-6 Big 12) match with the Cowgirls (10-10, 3-4 Big 12) operated on only three courts. Doubles' action was played regularly, while singles' competition featured the No. 1, 3, and 5 positions.
Ā
Oklahoma State jumped ahead with a 1-0 lead after taking courts one and three from K-State in doubles play. The Wildcats' No. 1 tandem – Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares – were outmatched in their battle with the Cowgirls' Alana Wolfberg and Lenka Stara, who took the set at 6-2. Ā
Ā
Senior Margot Decker and junior Anna Turco were the next Wildcat pairing to fall in the doubles round, as the duo dropped their set on court three, 6-2, against the Cowgirls' Bunyawi Thamchaiwat and Daniella Medvedeva.
Ā
Due to the lack of court space, K-State sent out the lineup of Job, Rosanna Maffei and Ioana Gheorghita to take on the Cowgirls in singles' competition. The energy from doubles play translated over for OSU in singles' competition, helping the Cowgirls post straight-set wins in each of the three singles' matches.
Ā
Facing off with another ITA-ranked foe, Job had her hands full with Oklahoma State's Bunyawi Thamchaiwat – the No. 19 player in the nation – and dropped her matchup in two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Ā
Gheorghita was the next Wildcat to slip in singles' action, as the sophomore was quickly dealt a two-set defeat by the Cowgirls' Lenka Stara, 6-2, 7-5.
Ā
Court three was the final matchup of the day, as Maffei ran out of gas against the Cowgirls' Ayumi Miyamoto in two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Ā
The loss marks the first defeat inside Body First Tennis Center for the Wildcats since February 14, 2020.Ā
Ā
The Wildcats finish out the 2021 regular season on Sunday, April 18 against No. 24 Oklahoma (12-5, 3-3 Big 12) at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium. Sunday's home finale will feature Senior Day festivities for K-State's Margot Decker and Lilla Barzo.
Ā
"The only way for us to win against Oklahoma is to play and compete as a team," said Smith. "Only that matters moving forward."
