Friday's match with the Cowgirls will feature K-State's annual "Pink Match," while Sunday's home finale will include Senior Day festivities for the Wildcats' Margot Decker and Lilla Barzo.
Due to COVID-19 protocols, there will be a limited seating at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium with fans being asked to arrive through the east gate off Denison Avenue. In accordance with City of Manhattan ordinances and Kansas State University policy, fans must wear face coverings over their mouths and noses in order to enter Mike Goss Tennis Stadium and continue wearing them inside the stadium.
"This is a great weekend for us to give the best send-off to our seniors," said head coach Jordan Smith. "Also, it's a great chance for our ladies to see if they can finish the regular season strong.
This weekend's slate of matches will be the final of 10 contests held in the Little Apple this spring for K-State. Through three homestands, the Wildcats (7-9, 2-5 Big 12) have produced six victories at both Body First Tennis Center and Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
The matchups with No. 40 Oklahoma State (9-10, 2-4 Big 12) and No. 24 Oklahoma (12-5, 3-3 Big 12) marks the third-straight week K-State will face off with an ITA-ranked opponent. Over the last three home matches, the Wildcats have collected a 1-2 record, which includes a 4-3 upset victory over in-state rival and No. 44 Kansas back on April 3. It was the first win against the Jayhawks in the Sunflower Showdown since 2014.
Last weekend, K-State dropped consecutive matches to No. 12 Baylor (18-3, 6-1 Big 12) and No. 2 Texas (20-1, 7-0 Big 12), which both sit atop the Big 12 standings.
In Friday's match versus the Bears, the Wildcats were able to rally for a pair of single wins from sophomore Karine-Marion Job and junior Maria Linares at the top of the lineup.
It was a stellar outing from Job, who dispatched Baylor's Mel Krywoj in three sets in the No. 1 position. Krywoj ranks No. 64 in the current ITA National Singles poll. That win gave Job her second career ranked victory in dual-match play. Linares rallied in a three-set thriller to knock off the Bears' Jessica Hinojosa, 6-4, 6-7 (10-7), 1-0 (10-6).
K-State now owns 37 wins in singles' competition, with 16 victories in doubles' action for the spring season. Linares leads all Wildcats with seven victories in singles play, all coming from the No. 2 position. Just behind with six wins is Job, who has taken the mantle at the top of the lineup in each match this spring.
Oklahoma State and Oklahoma will arrive in the Little Apple with multiple players represented in the ITA rankings. Each program currently has at least two players in the current ITA singles rankings, including Top-60 players in the Cowgirls' Bunyawi Thamchaiwat (No. 19) and Alana Wolfberg (No. 57) and Top 100 players in the Sooners' Carmen Corley (No. 73), Ivana Corley (No. 79) and Dana Guzman (No. 97).
For doubles' action, the Corley sisters from Oklahoma have elevated their game as of late, jumping up all the way to No. 15 overall in the ITA National Doubles poll with an impressive 22-3 mark on the year. The Cowgirls combination of Thamchaiwat and Ayumi Miyamoto have proven to be a difficult matchup, boasting a 6-6 record and No. 88 ranking in doubles play.
After Sunday's home finale with the Sooners, K-State will turn its attention towards the Big 12 Championship, which will begin on Thursday, April 22 in Waco, Texas at the Hurd Tennis Center. In the last matchup at the conference tournament, the Wildcats posted a 1-1 mark, defeating West Virginia, 4-3, in the first round before bowing out to Oklahoma State, 4-0, in the second round.
