It is K-State's fifth Boat of the Week selection
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team was honored for their performance at the Sunshine State Invitational, as the Varsity Four was selected as the Big 12's co-Boat of the Week on Wednesday (April 7).
Â
The Varsity Four, consisting of redshirt senior Logan Frost, sophomore Ellie Hahn, sophomore Elizabeth Sloan, sophomore Kate Odgers and sophomore coxswain Kaitlyn Henke, earned a bronze medal in the Grand Finals of the Sunshine State Invitational on Saturday, April 3 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
Â
The crew finished in third place behind host UCF and Clemson with a time of 8:56.43. K-State was one of only three boats to record times less than 9 minutes in the race, as the Wildcats outdistanced fourth-place Kansas by more than 23 seconds. Â
Â
"We are pleased this young crew has been recognized for their consistency early in our season," said head coach Patrick Sweeney. "They didn't allow the difficult conditions to deflect them from their goals and focus."
Â
K-State has now earned a total of five Boat of the Week honors since the Big 12 began handing out the weekly award in 2013 and this is the program's first since April 20, 2017 when the First Varsity Eight notched a gold-medal performance at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta (SIRAs).
Â
K-State's Varsity Four shared the Big 12's weekly honor with Kansas' Varsity Eight.
Â
In just their second official race of the season, the Wildcats' bronze medal finish in the Varsity Four race of the Grand Finals on April 3 highlighted a solid two-day performance at the Sunshine State Invitational against a field that included host UCF, Clemson, Jacksonville, Kansas, Miami (Fla.) and Stetson. Last Friday (April 2), the team collected third-place finishes from the Varsity Four (1v4+) and Varsity Eight (1v8+) boats.
Â
K-State will continue its race schedule next weekend, as the Wildcats travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Tulsa Triangular on Saturday, April 10. The regatta will include host Tulsa and Central Oklahoma.
