Wolfley Captures First Big 12 Men’s Javelin Title in Program History

May 15, 2021 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan.  – Senior thrower Logan Wolfley captured Kansas State's first men's javelin title in conference history on Friday (May 14) evening to highlight a successful outing on the first day of the Big 12 Outdoor Championship at R.V. Christian Track and Field Complex.

Wolfley, who hails from Silver Lake, Kansas, used a mark of 73.08m/239-9 on his fifth attempt to clinch the top spot in the event, which happened to snap the previous school record in the same moment set by former Wildcat Craig Smith back in 2002.

"This feels amazing," Wolfley stated. "There were a lot of really good competitors coming in. I knew (Werner) Bauer from Texas Tech, Scott (Fuchs) from Iowa State, they were going to come in and compete. Scott threw 72 meters, so that's crazy. That is a huge PR for him, I am super proud of him. Bauer, he hit some deep throws too. Fortunately, I was able to hit that 73 mark. If I wouldn't have hit that 73 mark, Scott would've won that. But I'm just super happy for the both of us. In warmups, I had a really good throw and then I also hit a really deep throw but I fell over the toe line so that didn't count. So, I knew I had it in me, I just had to do it legally. So that was the hardest part, 'Okay, I just did it now, let's do it again and make it count. Make it official'."

Wolfley's heroics in the javelin competition now puts him in elite company, as he now becomes the third overall winner in K-State history for the event between both the men's and women's programs during the Big 12 era.

If it weren't for Wolfley's historic efforts in the latter part of Friday's schedule, another senior would have stolen the show, as Lauren Taubert compiled a strong showing in the 200 meters of the women's heptathlon to surge back and take the early lead in the first half of the competition.

A native of Casper, Wyoming, Taubert was slotted at fourth place through three events before sprinting to a first-place finish in the 200 meters, where she posted a new personal record of 23.99. Her top performance on the track boosted her to a meet-leading score of 3,487 points heading into the final leg of the heptathlon on Saturday.

"Coming out in the hurdles, I was really happy with that time," said Taubert. "Just making it under 13.60 was a big accomplishment for me during the hep(tathlon). Then going into high jump, it didn't go like I wanted it to, but I'm just glad I got close to 1.70. So, I was okay with that. Then the shot put was frustrating for me. I know I can throw further than that, but I'll take it. The 200 was a PR. I just got out and attacked it. I was pretty frustrated with some of my other events, so that definitely helped me."

For the first day of the heptathlon, four events were featured in Friday's slate - the 100-meter hurdles, long jump, shot put, and 200 meters. Taubert's teammate – senior Ariel Okorie – delivered on her strong start in the heptathlon competition to stake her place at third overall with 3,450 points.

Okorie was equally impressive on Friday, posting new personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles (13.53), shot put (12.08m/39-07.75) and 200 meters (24.51).

K-State was represented in the men's heptathlon on Friday as well, as junior Matas Adamonis reeled in 3,784 points and a spot at third place before Saturday's finale. Adamonis proved he belonged with the Big 12's best, garnering a runner-up finish in the shot-put event with a mark of 14.50m/47-07, while earning top-five outings in the 400 meters (5th, 52.38), high jump (4th, 1.90m/6-02.75), and long jump competitions (4th, 7.10m/23-3.50).

If there was a time for K-State to have a complete team effort in one event at the conference championship, it would be women's hammer throw, where the team owns the most individual titles in Big 12 outdoor history (9).

Even though the Wildcats were unable to crown one of their own in the hammer throw this year, four athletes packed the top six of the leader board to notch a successful day in the ring. Senior Helene Ingvaldsen – the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Hammer Throw Champion – missed out on retaining her title but came away with the silver medal in the afternoon session, as she landed a throw of 64.99m/213-2 to finish just behind Oklahoma's Lauren Jones, who launched a winning mark of 66.20m/217-2.

K-State scored 22 total points in the women's hammer throw with three more podium performances from seniors Shaelyn Ward (3rd, 62.06m/203-7) and Ashley Petr (4th, 59.67m195-9), along with junior Taylor Latimer (6th, 59.20m/194-3). Both Petr and Latimer improved their personal records in the event, while Latimer used her career-best mark to squeeze into K-State's record books for the outdoor season, where she sits at No. 10 all-time for the hammer throw, just behind Petr (No. 9).

Continuing the Wildcats podium barrage in the field was the freshman pairing of Kade McCall and Brianna Lowe, who both handled their own in the women's javelin and men's hammer throw events. McCall, a product of Boise, Idaho, launched a throw of 63.02m/206-9, helping him secure a position at sixth overall. Kansas' Gleb Dudarev claimed the meet and facility record in the hammer throw to collect his fourth-consecutive title, as the senior unleashed a throw of 74.61m/244-9, which was 25 feet farther than the next competitor.

Lowe recorded a career-best mark in the javelin competition on her third attempt, hurling the spear in the ground at 46.64m/153-0 to move her up in the top five of the standings.

In the final events of the evening, the first slate of races on the track took place with both the men's and women's 10,000 meters. Freshman Jaybe Shufelberger paced herself to a nice finish at fifth overall with a time of 33:08.15 in the first endurance race.

After nearly a two-hour rain delay, the men's 10,000 meters picked back up at 11 p.m., CT, and the athletes were ready to roll. Sophomore Cooper Schroeder put together one of the greatest races by any K-State athlete in the 10,000 meters, as the Manhattan, Kansas, native scored a time of 29:05.62, which bumped him up to No. 2 all-time in school history for the outdoor season. Sophomores Kerby Depenbusch (11th, 29:53.37) and David Lutgen (15th, 30:44.73) zipped around R.V. Christian Track to cross the finish line in the top 15, respectively.

Day two of the Big 12 Outdoor Championship will start at 10 a.m., CT tomorrow with the final sessions of the heptathlon and decathlon competitions. Preliminary races for Saturday's track events will begin at 3 p.m., CT.
