K-State Runs Win Streak to Six with 16-1 Win Over Tigers

May 02, 2021 | Baseball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State tallied four home runs, including a home run for the fourth straight game by Chris Ceballos, in completing a three-game sweep of Texas Southern, 16-1, in a seven-inning, run-rule shortened contest Sunday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.

In extending its winning streak to a season-high six games, K-State (27-16) also got homers from Nick Goodwin, Zach Kokoska and Chad Shade. Ceballos, Goodwin and Shade each lifted three-run bombs to help back Kasey Ford, who allowed one run on three hits over five innings in the win.

"Really good weekend," head coach Pete Hughes said after the game. "End of an important stretch in our program's schedule with a 12-game homestand. It was important to take advantage of playing at home and getting back into the thick of things in the Big 12 standings and to get our team hot and in a position to go for a good run in May, and I thought we did all those things."

The Wildcats totaled 47 runs in the three-game sweep of Texas Southern (10-31) to go with 10 home runs, led by Ceballos' three over the weekend. Add in a 13-8 win Tuesday night against Missouri, and the Cats scored 60 runs in their last four games, with Ceballos totaling four homers and 15 RBI in that span.

K-State concluded its season-long homestand by going 10-2, hitting 22 home runs and averaging 9.2 runs per game. The three-week stretch included three series victories, with a pair of Big 12 series wins (Oklahoma, West Virginia).

"There's a lot of confidence out there," added Hughes. "That carried over from Tuesday night when we beat some guys from Missouri that had good stuff. There's nothing like getting hits and hitting home runs and hitting three-run home runs that get your offense going good."

Ceballos' three-run homer sparked a nine-run fourth inning. Goodwin's three-run blast finished the scoring, as 12 Wildcats came to the plate in the inning.

"I think it was huge," Ceballos said of his homer. "Today we were trying to just add on to what we've been doing the past two days. With me being able to get that home run, I think it really sparked something for the guys, keep it rolling and add on more runs for Kasey."

Ford (4-0) was perfect through his first three innings of work, sitting down the first nine he faced until a leadoff single by Tyrese Clayborne in the fourth. Ford's day ended with five strikeouts and no walks while scattering three hits.

"I felt good today," said Ford. "It's always nice to be able to go out there and no matter what, pitch to contact because you know your defense is going to play behind you and knowing that I'm going to get run support throughout the game. That's a huge thing, being able to be comfortable there, going out and throwing zeros up and knowing my team is going to back me up."

Kokoska's solo homer in the second stood as the game's only run through three frames. His team-leading 13th home run pushed his on-base streak to 39 games. The junior outfielder finished the day 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored.

A four-run fifth, that ballooned the Wildcats' lead to 14-1, was highlighted by Shade's first career hit and home run in his first career start at K-State. The graduate transfer from Springfield College (Division III) had just two at-bats in four games played entering Sunday.

"For me, the highlight of the game was Chad Shade," Hughes said. "What's going to be his last college game and gets his first start, and to hit a home run in last collegiate at-bat, that's a moment that will be in my top 10 in my coaching career. Without anything else being said, that is at the forefront of what I experienced today. That was just phenomenal."

Shade hit in the leadoff spot and started in left field in what was the final non-conference home game for the Cats. Shade, who drew a bases-loaded walk earlier in the game, ended the day 1-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored.

In addition to Goodwin's and Kokoska' two hits, Daniel Carinci went 2-for-3 and drove in two. Goodwin and Kokoska each doubled to pair with their homers, as K-State ended with seven extra-base hits.

All nine Wildcat starters reached base, with eight players recording at least one base hit.

The K-State bullpen logged two scoreless innings in relief of Ford, as Eric Torres, Elijah Day and Brett Wozniak combined to keep TSU without a hit. The trio struck out five of the six Tiger hitters they saw to end the game.

The Cats held TSU hitless with two outs (0-for-7) and 1-for-4 with runners on base.

Texas Southern starter Caleb DuBois suffered the loss, as he allowed five earned runs on five hits in three innings. DuBois, who made his first start of the year, walked one and struck out one.

TSU's lone run came on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Avery Chatman in the fifth. Nick Garza doubled for Texas Southern's only extra-base hit.

K-State will begin a six-game road swing with a Big 12 series at Baylor starting Friday. The series will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Radio coverage will be available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with live, free audio streaming at K-StateSports.com/watch.
