MANHATTAN, Kan. – A solid showing from a handful of Kansas State field athletes kicked off the first day of the Ward Haylett Invitational on Thursday (May 6) at R.V. Christian Track and Field Complex.
The men's discus event was the first event to take place on Thursday with senior Cameron Lewis and junior Colin Echols each recording top marks in the field. Lewis notched the victory with a new personal record of 57.66m/189-02, which also places him fifth all-time in school history. Echols found his groove on the final attempt at a mark of 53.81m/176-06, helping him garner runner-up honors and a new personal record as well.
"The throwers did a nice job and certainly have a little more in them," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto.
Three Wildcats competed in the long jump, as seniors Lauren Taubert, Wurrie Njadoe and Ariel Okorie earned the top three spots in the competition. Taubert grabbed top honors with a new personal leap of 6.21m/20-04.5, while Njadoe (6.07m/19-11) and Okorie (5.98m/19-07.50) finished in second and third places, respectively.
"Lauren (Taubert) had a nice PR in the long jump," said Rovelto. "Wurrie (Njadoe) hasn't jumped in a while, so today was certainly a step forward."
Along with Taubert and Okorie, freshmen Briana Lowe and Kaitlyn Young competed against one another in the javelin competition to close out day one at the Ward Haylett Invitational.
Lowe ended up as the top finisher in the javelin, firing a throw of 44.40m/145-08 to withstand Okorie's mark of 38.56m/126-06.
"The hep(tathlon) gals had a solid day," Rovelto stated. "Both Lauren (Taubert) and Ariel (Okorie) had a strong series in the javelin."
K-State will continue its homestand with the second leg of the Ward Haylett Invitational tomorrow at 5 p.m., CT, as the team will follow up with another stint of field events followed by the first slate of running events.
