Wolfey earns Second Team All-America honors in the javelin
EUGENE, Ore. – Seniors Jullane Walker and Logan Wolfley concluded their collegiate careers in the men's long jump and javelin with solid performances, as each picked up All-America honors on day one of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.
Wolfley, a native of Silver Lake, Kansas, finished 15th in the javelin with a throw of 67.59m/221-9 to collect Second Team All-America honors – which are the first of his career. Walker, a Kingston, Jamaica native, finished 18th in the long jump with a leap of 7.34m/24-01 to earn honorable mention accolades.
"Logan actually threw very well," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "He had a very good opener, rushed the second and threw well over 70 meters on his third, which would have put him in the final. Somehow in the aftermath of the throw he stepped on the foul line, so he lost that throw. The throw was over and done when he fouled. It's unfortunate, but it is the rule. Jullane was struggling with some cramping during the competition. Both have been significant contributors to our program. They will be missed most definitely."
Wolfley and Walker are the first of 13 Wildcats that will be in action during the four-day NCAA Championships at historic Hayward Field. The 13 individuals (10 women, 3 men) are competing in 11 events (women's 100 meters, women's 400-meter hurdles, women's discus, women's hammer throw, women's shot put, men's high jump, men's javelin, men's and women's long jump, women's triple jump and heptathlon) with the Wildcats having at least two individuals competing on each day of the Championship meet.
Making his debut at the NCAA Championships, Wolfley had to wait for his opportunity to compete until the second flight of the javelin. He posted his best mark on his first attempt with a throw of 67.59m/221-09 to place eighth after the first round. He came back with a toss of 64.52m/211-8 on his second attempt and fell to 14th place. He unleashed a throw of more than 70 meters on his third and final attempt, which would have put him in the finals of the event, however, he stepped on the foul line and the throw was disallowed. His first-round throw of 67.59m/221-09 helped him land in the top-15.
Wolfley is just the fourth Wildcat to earn All-America honors in the javelin since 1991 and the first since Ivan Hartung finished 16th at the 2014 Championships, also held in Eugene. Overall, he is seventh Wildcat to collect First or Second Team All-America honors in the javelin since 1943. His 15th-place finish is the highest in the event since T.J. Turner finished a spot higher in 14th in 1995.
LSU's Tzuriel Pedigo won the javelin title with a toss of 76.98m/252-7 to narrowly defeat D.J. Jonsson of Mississippi State by less than a foot, as Jonsson finished second with a throw of 76.73m/251-9. Six of the top-10 finishers came with the SEC, as Jonsson was one of three Bulldogs in the top-5.
The school-record holder in the javelin, Wolfley concludes his career with his first-ever All-America honor. He became the first Wildcat to win a Big 12 title in the javelin with his school-record throw of 73.08m/239-09 at the conference championships in May. He also placed first in the event at the NCAA West Regional on May 26 with a mark of 72.40m/237-06.
Making his second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships, Walker was the first Wildcat in action on day one of Championships in the long jump. The first jumper in the second flight of the event, he posted his best mark on his initial attempt, leaping 7.34m/24-01 (+1.5) to place 13th out of 24 competitors. He nearly matched the jump on his second attempt, posting a mark of 7.27m/23-10.25, to fall to 18th place. He could not better either jump on his third and final attempt with a mark of 6.96m/22-10 to finish in 18th place. He missed earning Second Team All-America honors by just two spots.
Walker finishes his career with a pair of top-20 finishes in the long jump at NCAA Championship (2019, 2021), along with two fourth-place finishes in the event at the Big 12 Championships. His leap of 7.96m/26-01.50 at the most recent Big 12 Championship ranks as the third-best mark in the long jump in school history, while he ranks among the top-4 in five other events (indoor 60, indoor 200, indoor 300, outdoor 100 and outdoor 200) in school history between the indoor and outdoor seasons.
LSU's JuVaughn Harrison won the long jump title with a mark of 8.27m/27-01.75 (+1.9) followed by Florida State's Isaac Grimes (7.95m/26-01) and Tennessee's Carey McLeod (7.94m/26-00.75), who finished in second and third place, respectively. Big 12 champion Steffin McCarter of Texas placed fifth with a leap of 7.84m/25-08.75.

The running events will also get started on Thursday with junior Wurrie Njadoe competing in the semifinals of 100 meters and senior Kimisha Chambers running in the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles.
