Jul 13, 2021 | Tennis
MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the sixth time in seven years, the Kansas State women's tennis program was recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as an All-Academic Team and all eight members of the team were named as ITA Scholar-Athletes.
"This is another great academic achievement by this group," stated head coach Jordan Smith. "Our ladies are fortunate to have the support and resources here at K-State to help them excel in the classroom. Thanks to Krystal Clarke for all good work she does for this program."
The eight selections are the most in school history and are the most selections since 2020.
K-State was one of nine Big 12 schools named a 2020-21 All-Academic Team, while its eight ITA Scholar-Athlete selections were tied for most athletes on the list in the Big 12, along with TCU and Texas.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners are factored into the cumulative team GPA for the academic year.
Juniors Maria Linares and Anna Turco earned Scholar-Athlete accolades for the third consecutive season, while seniors Lilla Barzo and Margot Decker as well as sophomores Ioana Gheorghita and Rosanna Maffei each won the award for the second straight season. Sophomore Karine-Marion Job and freshman Manami Ukita each collected the honor for the first time in their respective careers.
Decker, Ukita, Job, Linares and Turco finished the 2020-21 season with a 4.0 GPA.
To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale) for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their school for at least two semesters.
K-State has collected 40 Scholar-Athlete over the past eight seasons after having only two ITA team awards and eight Scholar-Athletes from 2002-13.
At the conclusion of the season, Barzo, Decker, Gheorghita, Job, Linares, Maffei and Turco each collected Academic All-Big 12 First Team accolades. The seven players were also named to both the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Rolls, while Ukita was selected to the Spring 2021 list.
The Wildcats finished the 2020-21 season with an overall record of 7-12 (2-7 Big 12).
