Aug 19, 2021 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Former Kansas State head volleyball coach Jim McLaughlin is one of four members to be selected as the 2021 Hall of Fame class by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), the organization announced.
McLaughlin spent four seasons at the helm of the Wildcats (1997-2000) and amassed a record of 82-43 (.656), taking the Wildcats to four straight NCAA Tournaments. During his final season in Manhattan, he led K-State to a second-place finish in the Big 12, a berth in the regional final of the 2000 NCAA Tournament and a No. 16 national ranking.
McLaughlin was named the head coach at Washington prior to the 2001 season and tabbed then-assistant Suzie Fritz as the interim head coach of the Cats. Fritz assumed permanent head coaching duties later that season and is set to enter her 21st season as the Wildcats head coach in 2021.
"I was very fortunate to work under Jim as an assistant coach for several years," Fritz said of McLaughlin. "I am eternally grateful for the opportunity he gave me to come to K-State. He had a dramatic impact on the success of K-State volleyball and my career personally. He is an incredibly talented and knowledgeable teacher of the game of volleyball and has acted as a mentor to countless players and coaches."
McLaughlin, who retired in 2017, holds the distinction of being the only Division I head coach to win a national title as both a men's and women's head coach, leading the Southern California men to a championship in his first season in 1990 before earning the crown with the Washington women in 2005.
Across his 28 seasons as a head coach, he put together a record of 632-253 (.714). In 21 years as a women's head coach, he qualified for the postseason 18 times with stops at K-State, Washington and Notre Dame.
McLaughlin will be inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame on December 16 at the AVCA Convention in Columbus, Ohio. He will become part of a group of more than 90 hall of famers who have made significant contributions to the sport of volleyball.
