Wildcats Fight off Ramblers in Five Sets Friday Night
Sep 10, 2021 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Double-doubles from Teana Adams-Kaonohi and Aliyah Carter, to go with a career-high 18 kills from Holly Bonde, helped K-State fend off Loyola Chicago for a five-set victory Friday night at Bramlage Coliseum, 25-19, 25-21, 21-25, 20-25, 15-8.
K-State (5-2) raced out to a two-set lead but held on for its fourth straight victory after Loyola (6-3) forced a winner-take-all frame. In the fifth, the Wildcats used scoring runs of three and four points while closing the match on a 7-2 scoring spurt.
"We played our best when it mattered the most," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "That's generally the mark of great teams. Be at your best when your best is required. I thought they played aggressively in the fifth and that can go either way. You get there and a lot of times the team that makes the least amount of errors and stays within themselves and not get too conservative (wins). There's a difference between trying to win and trying not to lose. I felt like we went out in the fifth and tried to win. That part of it felt really good and I was proud of them for that."
In the fifth, Kadye Fernholz sparked the Cats' rally with three kills on four swings, a pair of blocks and a service ace. Fernholz's night included eight kills at a .350 clip to go with a career-high eight blocks. The sophomore middle blocker has hit .333 or better in all seven matches this season.
"Kadye is such a versatile middle," Fritz said of Fernholz. "She really upgraded in her ability to hit front quicks and her blocking. She might be one of our most improved players. She's incredibly coachable. She learns fast. She makes a lot of little volleyball plays around the net that keep us in rallies."
The Wildcat defense forced the Ramblers into as many errors (6) as kills for a .000 team efficiency in the final set. K-State registered five blocks in the set and two service aces. Kayley Hollywood and Haley Warner teamed up for three block assists in the set.
Bonde's career-best kill output came at a .245 efficiency. The redshirt junior logged seven kills on 14 attacks in the fourth set with just one error (.429). Bonde added four digs and a block.
"I like the way Holly Bonde is playing a lot," added Fritz. "I'm excited about her improvement and her maturity and her swing production. She's really doing a nice job with her swings and attacking with range. I'm just really excited about that for her."
The match's first two sets saw 24 tie scores and 16 lead changes. The Cats held Loyola to a .054 team percentage in the opening frame, behind three blocks from Warner and two by Fernholz.
Sophomore libero Mackenzie Morris, who had a team-best 19 digs, served up back-to-back aces to put an end to the second set. Morris finished contest with three aces to lead all players and has recorded multiple aces in three of her last four outings.
Loyola led throughout the third set, hitting .231 to the Wildcats' .051. The Ramblers totaled five blocks and got four kills from Emily Banitt. K-State's deficit was as large as six points before trimming the Loyola lead to two at 23-21.
K-State scored five of the first seven points in set four, including three kills from Bonde and an ace from Morris. A 12-4 Rambler scoring run created a five-point gap, and Loyola ended with a match-high .447 efficiency in tying the match.
K-State snapped the Ramblers' five-match winning streak, which included a pair of straight-set victories to begin the K-State Invitational.
"That's a really good volleyball team," Fritz said of Loyola. "It sounds kind of non-descriptive to say, but they just simply play very good volleyball. They can play long. They're not going to give you a lot of points. They're going to serve and pass pretty well. They're going to dig like crazy. They're little and athletic. They can really play."
Loyola held a 64-61 edge in total kills and had a .210 team hitting percentage to K-State's .181.
Carter produced a career-high 18 digs to go with 17 kills. Carter has three double-doubles on the season and four for her career.
Adams-Kaonohi turned in season highs in assists (47) and digs (12) in carding her first double-double of the season.
K-State tallied nine service errors while committing just three service errors while the Ramblers had one ace and eight service errors. The Cats totaled a season-best 13 blocks and have cracked double figures in five of seven contests this season.
Addie Barnes and Karlie McNabb paced the Rambler offense with 15 kills apiece. Banitt pitched in a dozen and Taylor Venuto accounted for 10.
K-State concludes the weekend against Fresno State at 11 a.m. The match is free to all fans and will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the ESPN app. Radio coverage is also available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with free, live audio available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
