Shufelberger Leads Wildcats at Cowboy Jamboree

STILLWATER, Okla. - The Kansas State men's and women's cross country competed for the first time in nearly a year on Saturday (September 18) at the Cowboy Jamboree at the OSU Cross Country Course.
In a competitive field that included 18 men's teams and 16 women's teams, K-State finished in seventh place in the women's 6K with 188 points, while the men's team placed ninth in the 8k with 294 points. Both squads finished ahead of conference foes Texas Tech and Oklahoma.
"We had great effort today," stated head coach Ryun Godfrey. "We learned a lot about where we are and what we need to do going forward. I am confident the team is headed in the right direction."
The women's team saw all eight runners finish in the top 100 led by junior Jaybe Shufelberger, who placed 13th with a time of 21:34.8. Sophomore Hannah Stewart was the next Wildcat to cross the finish line in 33rd place with a time of 22:28.7, while fellow sophomores Cailan Steward and Sydney Burton finished in 37th and 51st places, respectively, with times of 22:46.5 and 23:02.9.
In her first collegiate race, freshman Alexa Rios finished 75th overall with a time of 23:45.5. Rounding out for the Wildcats was sophomore Katie Kasunic in 86th place (24:04.9), sophomore Delaney Kemp in 95th (24:35.7) and freshman Helen Geifer in 98th (24:46.18).
In the men's competition, all 11 runners placed among the top-150 led by senior Hadley Spletcher who finished 60th out of 179 competitors with a time of 25:25.3. Junior David Lutgen wasn't too far behind in 65th with a time of 25:30.5. Next up was fifth-year Noah Stevenson, clocking in at 25:43.08 and placing 72nd, while senior Stephen Kielhofner finished 73rd with a time of 25:43.18.
Freshman Matthew Hauser finished 82nd (25:55.94) in his first-ever collegiate race followed by fellow freshmen Carson Sturdy (87th, 26:04.41), junior Mike Rohlinger (88th, 26:05.31), freshman Thomas Hazen (92nd, 26:11.83) and freshman Alex Gutierrez (117th, 26:42.96). Closing out for K-State was junior Jack Moore with a time of 27:00.15 to place 125th and sophomore Christian Buehler with a time of 27:27.05 to clinch 138th place.
The Wildcats will take a short break before heading off to the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Missouri on October 1. The first race will begin at 9 a.m. with the men's 8K followed by the women's 6K at 9:45 a.m.
